Removing Porsche 911 hood emblems



Q: You need an eight millimeter deep socket, a pair of hemostats, and some kind of pick like you would find in a bowl full of nuts. The trouble is the nut you are removing has like a built in washer and some kind of putty sealant.

The hole to access them is very small and most of the time the putty keeps the nut on the back of the emblem. I use a pair of hemostats to retrieve the "speednut" but they are hard to grab just right. I try to grab them on the 8 mill nut part, not the exterior "washer" part or the hemos are spread to wide to get the whole mess out of the access hole.

If you get the hemos stuck, its easy to drop one of those nuts inside the inner hood (I always keep a bunch of these speednuts in my tool box orngbiggrin.gif ) and will most likely be gone forever. Use the pick to poke into the center of the nut so you can release hemos without losing the nut.

I wish Porsche would make those holes bigger. Even when the nuts aren't stuck to the emblem, they get stuck on the way out since that putty makes them wider than the hole.

Anybody else know of an easier way?

A: I know what you mean. I just did a GT3 and had the same problem. It seems like the hole is a hair bigger than the nut.

The only thing i can add is if you can get someone to help you, its easier with 2 people. Also when removing the nuts, whether alone or with help, have the hood half way open so that the chance of that nut falling into never never land in minimal.

I used small needle nose pliers to pull the nuts out when they were loosened.

A: Maybe if you put some butyl in the socket it would hold on to the nut, butyl is the stuff that winshield shops use for some window installs its real sticky and never dries

A: A standard 8mm socket on a nut driver will work fine, in order to release the sealant from inside, unscrew the nuts half way while lifting on the emblem then pull the emblem off, as pristine said keep the hood halfway open, while lifting this will stick the nuts to the hood, then take your socket and put on the nuts and pull them down, then use a pick with a 90% angle and it will pull through. You can get a mechaniics pick set from any local hardware store for under 10 bucks. Just be careful when re tightening the nuts as the emblem is made of pot-metal, hand tight is plenty, twist too hard and you just bought an emblem.

I redid a hood from someone else and the emblem had been glued, the owner knew nothing about it, get that explained the shoddy install as well??

A: I'd like to add one thing be carfull when re installing the hood emblem not to tighten it to much, the posts can come loose from the back of the emblem. also try not to remove the emblem to many times the speed nuts are not ment to be used muliple times and in my expeiance can strip the posts making it impossile to make the hood emblem tight again.

A: We don't generally remove the emblem, just get annoyed with the designers and cut around it... Sure it probably looks cleaner to remove it, but is complete BS if you ask me. Takes time and money while adding risk, all for something that is nearly pointless in the grand view of things... So designers out there, add the cut out for it as an option...

A: I agree, that would save a lot of time and trouble. I bet most of my customers would go that route if I gave them the choice. Especially when they find out I'd charge more if they want me to take the thing off.

A: I've never charged more to remove it. I just do it because it makes a cleaner install, with the proper tools it can be removed in under a minute. i do lots of Porsche's and i carry the tools with me, if I'm off site, they are in my truck.

A: Sure you can remove it quickly if the car is new and you are lucky. If the car is a couple years old it is much riskier. In any case I still think it is a waste of time and effort...

A: I never even looked to see if the Ferrari badge comes off. I'm sure if you mess one up, it costs way more than the Porsche.

The ones on Porsches are on a flat surface but the Ferraris I have done had recessed areas where the badge sits, maybe thats why.
