Colder Temps affect PPF Installs
Q: With the colder temps, and the slip solution possibly not drying out as fast as it would during summer - would that have any affect on the adhesion of the PPF file ?
A: I am up here in Alaska and a steamer has been my best friend. Without it, the film is not nearly as pliable and of course the adhesive doesn't activate as well. I have found that there are a bunch of different factors such as a concrete floor (heat rises, concrete slab is unheated..yada..yada), cold car panels from being outside, cold solution from setting it down on the cold floor, film being cold from transporting in the trunk, etc. If I heat the garage to about 85 degrees I seem to overcome most of these problems but on a mobile install where the outside temp is -10 F, the customer can't or usually doesn't want to heat the garage up that much.
Just my 2 cents.....all I know is that the film is like cardboard when it is cold and saran wrap when warm....and carboard doesn't lay down to well.
A: wash the vehicle with the warmest water possible. This way the water will heat up the steel and hopefully by the time you have finished preping the vehicle the paint will still be "warm". Keep your solutions warm as well, this will help soften the material, and make it more pliable.
