For anyone cutting flames or other patterns by hand, you should try Fiskars "Shapecutter". It cost me $14.99 and does a very good job of cutting flames and other graphics without even picking up the blade.
I did an entire flame pattern graphic without even picking up the blade once. You can pick them up at any craft store. It's advertised as cutting photos, paper, etc. and I figured it would be great for cutting graphics and it is. Just make sure to use it on a soft cutting pad so you're not constantly paying for blades. Hopefully someone will try it out.

For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face:
now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
