We took in an older Nissan 240SX hatchback for removal and retinting for the rear 3 windows and quoted him between $75-$150 for the removal and $180 for the retint. Usually we don't have any problems with tint removal since we have a steamer but this thing was something else. Very purple and bubbled and it wasn't hot enough to use garbage bags to sweat it off. We spent a little over an hour to do just this small section with the steamer WITHOUT RAZOR BLADES. After my guy examined the glass more closely, we noticed that there was another clear layer of film covering the adhesive. At that point we called the customer and told him that we could not remove the tint without using razor blades and risking the chance of damaging the defrost lines. We also told him that the cost would run around $200 unless we can scrape it. We would charge him $100 to scrape it off. After pondering his options, he decided to have the rear glass replaced so we can tint a new glass. At that point I was relieved and didn't even charge him for the time that we spent on removing the small section. Here are some pictures. Every once in a while we run across this TINT FROM HELL and we told ourselves that once we encounter it, we would either pass on the job or tell them they need to replace the glass if they do not want us to scrape off the old tint and defrost lines. those i don't even think twice about them. i tell them i'm gonna scrape it and probably ruin their defroster. or they can replace the glass. since most people in texas don't have a use for the defroster, they just let me scrape it. i got better things to do with my time than spend it "picking" on that kind of crap.

he made the right choice. After all the new glass installed might have cost him as much as the removal of the old film. thumb.gif

Ouch, that one looks like it hurt. I have told customers that they would have no choice but to loose their defroster, but I never had one opt to replace the window. Thanks for the tip, 'cause now I can suggest that in the future. I know that most rears you can get cheap at the yards around here. Make it the tip of the week!

Years ago, long before the steamer trick had been thought of, I had a Subaru XT come in to get stripped and redone. Same thing, purple bubbles, when you got the purple off, there was a clear layer over the adhesive. It took two full days of screwing with it and only it to get it off. It was horrible. Even then we wrecked a few of the lines, we had to use razor blades between the defrosters, no other way to remove it. Wonder if it would have been easier with a steamer, but I doubt it. If only the cars like that came with warning signs! And, anyone ever figure out who makes the poop.gif that does that? Plenty of purple bubbled film comes off without the agony that stuff causes. Glad your customer had some sense, and it sure was nice meeting you week before last!

If any of you know how or can get a cheap hook up for glass removal/installation- the stuff will come off very easily without a prescription.
