Full Version: Dirt under the film
Been tinting for 3 years in the UK mainly self taught and I can't get the glass clean. Do only a few cars a year, as the main business is signs making but have just done 1st 2 cars of this year. Spent ages cleaning each window twice with a lint free cloth and then went over each lightly with a tac rag like a paint shop uses. Then i immediately peal the tint, wet it and the glass and apply. Still get bits under the film. Not off the head liner as I have the door open. Can't work it out. Not talking of 2 tiny bits in odd places, but often lots of bits in a corner or across the top. Tried everything I can think of! Help please! Getting really hacked off!

What he said!^
I use my, 3 S's. Scrape, Scrub, Squeegie... Reapeat. Then, rinse like mad. And for Pete sake wash those hands! If all else fails, read the link above.
I agree with 3 S's. No towel, lint free or otherwise, except the top edge or the sides if they are not felt. The squeegee gets the final pass, it is much cleaner, and saves $$$$$ on paper towels. Paper towels (shop towels) only need to be used to wrap around the old hard card.

This is my 16th year tinting autos, and I still fight with contamination in my jobs. Granted, things have improved a lot over the years, but I still have that occasional tear-off that has too much contamination in it... I really don't need that kind of advertisment out there, so I just re-do them right away.
Thanks guys for your help! Knew the info was prob on the site already, but couldn't find it. Thanks for your assistance.
Have done big Volvo this week with improved results but what a tight fit these swedes are round the seals!!!!.
Hey man i had the same problem. For the longest time every rollup i did had dirt in the same spots. My uncle told me to spray off my fingers b4 i peel the film and what do you know no more dirt
i was having the same problem!
until...... i got myself a proper tintshop! you have to make sure the room is super clean and dont have air rotation at all!. what a result! thx to tintdude containation control page! by the way, i do tinting in london, uk.
If it's in the corners you're touching the film during the install or touching the film to something else.
If it's along the top it's because you're not cleaning the top edge of the glass. Then as you're placing it the film goes up to high and touches the top edge and picks it up. [*]380859[/*] I say film handling techniques are most important! I have done some mobile tinting and work mostly in a three sided shop and can get some very clean jobs.
If you did a few more cars you would get better - dont expect to get clean jobs when you are doing so little tinting.

relax and don't try to hard.I usually sing the theme song from the show "Facts of Life " to myself when I tinting to get my mind off of it."You take the good,ya take the bad, you take them both, and there you have ,the facts of life."

can't lose what you never had.
apart from all else that has already been said..
a good light like site lights shining onto glass you are cleannig, suprising what you can pick up on the glass I use rubber gloves for putting on my installs, only takes a few extra minutes on my time or wash fingers thoroughly (especially after lunch!) IMO.. Its better to redo than leave dirt in there ... its your advert blah blah
post removed.
use a squeege
you have to use the 3 S's.... scrape scrub and squeege. blade your windos first{except rear window with defrost} , scrub it with a 3m scrubbie and then squeege it, clean the edges with a paper towel and make sure your bottle has a ton of pressue so you can blow any debris off. try putting a tire valve on your pressure sprayer and dont put more than 50 lbs and you will knock any crap from your film...... over 50 lbs and the bottle cracks or blows up
I would think that he got it down with the post being from 2005??
I am planning to try mobile tinting. What do mobile tinters do to prevent dust contamination.

Some tinters claim the can tint out doors with out a tent. What is the secret of avoiding contaminations.
dont forget to wipe down the top edge with a wet paper towel.
i do agree with everyone else the 3 s is a must you should also use a good paper towel like bounty and wipe the sides and top edge of the glass over and over till no dirt is on it then re squeegee it good luck on fighting that dirt dude
For rollups before being applied I only spray bottom/middle and sides, it greatly reduced contamination... and for quarters I squeegee clean then apply.
