Pep boys replacement side view mirrors

Hey guys what's up? I have an issue with my side view mirror and I was wondering if you guys could answer some questions I have

My side view mirror cracked and my friend ordered a replacement mirror for me. He told me that the guy working there said that I can just place the new one over the old one. Would you guys recommend that or should I take out the old glass?

And second, are those replacement mirrors good?

somebody please help me...

I suppose you could use exterior mounting double sided tape, just don't use the normal double sided tape, it won't stand up to weather exposure, but the exterior mounting tape is the same stuff used to hold antennas on rear windows.

Personally, i would have it done correctly at an auto glass shop, taking out the old one and replacing it properly.

bingo.gif if you are gonna mount it make sure you use 3m double sided tape and make sure you before you apply the tape use a heat gun on low or a hairdryer to heat the tape and make it more tackier

So I can probably get 3M exterior mounting tape at a place like Home Depot, Loews or Wal-Mart? And if I use a hair dryer, how long should I heat the tape for?

Sorry for asking so many questions but this is the first I'm personally doing any repairs to this car by myself so I wanna make sure I do it right

Yup, you can get the tape anywhere like that. You'll probably only need to heat up the surfaces if you live in a cold climate. dunno.gif

I live in NJ so it's not that bad.

One last question

Is there a noticeable difference between a mounted glass than the original? Like will it hinder my vision while driving?

Thanks a lot, you guys are awesome!

you just need to heat it up a little bit, dont leave the heat on it to long or else the tape will burn.

when you heat the tape it will get a glossy look to it from a side angle, that is good. if you heat it to much it will start to get bumpy and orange peel look to it, thats not so good.

most replacement mirrors you order from the auto parts stores have a sheet of tape on it already. thumb.gif

Hate to dig up an old thread (and hate to ask a question on my fist post, very noob) but how do you remove the old glass from the mirror in a situation like the above?
The ///Man
wow I came to this late, this is my stuff I should pay more attention.

1) go ahead and remove the old glass
2) Use a flat screwdriver or something similar to pry the old glass off, might want to break it inot smaller pieces to make it easier, and be careful on to put too much stress on the mounting plate.
3) when the glass is all off, scrape the excess tape/adhesive with a razor and clean the surface with alcohol, clean the glass too
4) stick that puppy on with double sided tape, and get it on where you want it because you only have one shot.

heat the old mirror and scrap it off the back plate then use silicon on the new on and wrap masking tape around the housing to hold it in for about a day and you will be good to go

I'm not sure if they can or will do that. But I do know that you can usually order a replacement glass specific to your vehicle. I believe mirrors are around 10 to 20 dollars. Try to check out some online parts stores.

For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face:
now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
