Full Version: help dropping a straight line
Having a little problem dropping a straight line to seperate two different colors that I am going to paint. The body of the car is curved and everything that I have tried has looked just a little funny.(not uniform) Any tips on making the seperating line flow better with the body? or do I just keep trying untill it looks ok. also any tips on making sure that both sides are the same?

If you are doing it in vinyl, you can pull and stretch it on the car to get the effect you're looking for.... Somewhat! Sometimes, I will to a freehand a stripe to make a guideline. Then pull and stretch what you're after along the line.
Start with some fine line tape.....its very flexable. Start at the front of the car. Try to find something to eyeball a distance from....like a corner reflector, or a fender/hood gap etc...(this will help evenness on both sides)
Tack the fine-line down at your starting point. Unroll and walk back to the first door,.....try to stretch the tape and get it looking good, then tack it where the door starts. now do the same thing at tack it at the quater, and the azz end. It takes a lil practice and a good eye. ...sometimes, you have to follow the body lines. and for the even-ness.......you can be +/- an 1/8" and be OK. remember....you cant look at both sides of the car at the same time anyway. Hope this helps...
How about a laser leveler to get the tape line?

[*]369573[/*] Its a mitsubishi eclipse, and yes I am trying to two-tone it. so far I love all the help great ideas never would have thought of the lasere level good thing I got one of them. Thanks Chris
well if its an eclipse......trust me, you dont want a bluntly straight line. god no! lol. Have you ever pin-stripped a car before?? Like with the 3M vynal stripping?? Thats a good way to compare tapeing off for the 2-tone.
Just flow with the lines of the car. I dunno what gen Eclipse it is, but I can see a 99ish being tricky to find the right break since their so curvy. Another tip.....upload a side veiw pic of the car into photoshop, or microsoft paint. Play with it there. perfect way to get an idea where things should be.
well thanks for the help I have it all taped and ready to spray. Just have to wait for the weather to cooperate, looks lie I will be spraying it on tuesday gona be 68 and sunny and low hummidity. I guess this means I'll be going to work at 6:00am to get of early......oh well it will be worth it.
can anyone hlp me with the spray pattern that the clear should be at I am kind of having a little trouble getting it just right? last week I sprayed the front bumper and the spoiler and its 2 side peices. the spoiler and side pieces came out good (one peice can out real good no orange peel at all) but the bumper ended up being all pitted I think that the air to product adjustment was wrond (to much air) would that make sence? thanks for all the help I will post a link to some pics after I spray it Chris
