Full Version: back glass of an Eclipse
Can anyone give me some advise on how this is to be done? I am trying to so it in one piece and I have never done this type of window before. I have been told to try doing it with two pieces. Do I cut the pieces vertical or horizontal? CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!!!! I have done all the windows except this one and it is a real b*!&h!
what year is it?...if it is a older body style lets say 2000-2005
my best advise to you if you have never tinted one and you are not a pro....take it to a pro..that will do it right and have it look good QUOTE (tintgod @ Feb 18 2006, 02:26 PM) what year is it?...if it is a older body style lets say 2000-2005 my best advise to you if you have never tinted one and you are not a pro....take it to a pro..that will do it right and have it look good [*]373315[/*] Not a car for newbies. If you do seam it, seam it horizontally, following a defoggerline to hide the seam. You're still going to have to shrink the hell out of it even in two pieces.
It is a 1995. I can't really afford to go to a pro or believe me I would have done that at around 1 o'clock today!! Thanks for the advise. I'm not sure what it means to wet shrink? can you give a quick run down on that?

but if your still willing to try it..read this. http://www.tintdude.com/heat-shrinking.html
When I do the dry shrink method, do I keep both the tint and the glass completely dry and if so how does it anchor? These may seem like dumb questions but I am a first timer for glass like this. I have previously done my 99 mustang and I also did my 95 t-bird. Talk about easy, then I come to tackle this import and I am on the verge of going back to smoking!!!!

that back glass will be tough for the newbie. but if you've already tackled the t bird and the 'stang...
that eclipse came with two optional windows. one is a lot harder than the other. the hard one is curved on the top with an antenna electrode, the other is flat at top without the electrode.
the one i'm thinking of is curved at top and a real mf'er.

I just tinted a 99 eclipse today and just about had it one pieced then I f##ked up both of the top corners...I heated it too much and creased it. How can you prevent this while getting maximum shrinkage? I tried using the lift and pull method but it didnt want to shrink anymore. WTF??

Keep practicing Slow down and keep moving from corner to corner before too much heat builds up in the glass. shrink towards those top corners. dont anchor the sides.

I just anchor one line in the middle, that car is easier if you make the anchor a bit higher on the b/g to reduce the size of the fingers...

Yeah t he top of that b/g is much hardewr than it looks...
QUOTE (sunlimitedCT @ Aug 9 2009, 01:59 PM) [*]709005[/*] Yeah t he top of that b/g is much hardewr than it looks... yup Ill know now not to underestimate a window. It seems like whenever I think Ive got something down it usually takes me twice as long to do it. Just cause I thought it was going to take me x amount of time. Gotta love the tint business QUOTE (VIP tint + glass @ Aug 8 2009, 04:20 PM) [*]708856[/*] shrink towards those top corners. dont anchor the sides. i too tried one of these today and couldnt get it. first time i tried i had my anchor about halfway down, it didnt like it. second time around i moved the anchor down some cause thats where it looked like most of the curve was plus i anchored the sides. a lot better turn out but i ended up shrinking the top right corner to much and the top left corner wasnt to far behind it. im with hollywood, why wouldnt you anchor the sides? it seems i got my best results that way. will the fingers on the sides lay down on the inside? or do you cut them along defrost lines to lay them down? hes bringing his car back in tuesday so i will have to try it again then.
You can shrink film to the sides......not all the way to the edge, because it will burn, but that is beneficial on these back windows. On the Eclipse back glass there is at least a three inch border on the sides. Cut Your film on the sides almost to the edge of the glass. Leave a few small fingers on the side of the glass, to lessen the "bulk" in the top and bottom shrink. Once You finish shrinking the top and the bottom, shrink the small fingers to the side (yes they will shrink) and then BURN the edges. Burning the edges draws the film tight to the sides.
Heres a picture of a GTI that I used this method on. Notice the sides of the film.
That looks Kinda like TTS's super secret shrink technique...

sideways shrinking!! about 6-7 yrs ago I posted a tip for that shrinking on the sides sometimes even toasting them..pass the black border line. On a site called Gr8tints I think some dummy e-mailed me saying I'm crazy blah blah..Been doin that on all the cars!!
