New Model

Hello folks

I am pretty new to Car window tinting, mostly I have just done Flat glass, rears on light commercials etc, I have a customer who wants his new shape Rangerover doing, he is already a customer of mine for Signs and Graphics and I would like to keep him happy.

I have been in the business of applying pressure sensitive vinyl for over 15 years now without any major problems and very high customer satisfaction, I started selling window films mainly the clear shatter resist type in 95, and have fitted these and black out/privacy films to various large plate glass windows, I also do a lot of window graphics, I know about various techniques for application and own a range of tools and consumables/application fluids etc.

I am a bit cautious of this beast having read several posts in these forums and would welcome any guideance you may be kind enough to offer

I don'twant thisto come out arrogentcauseit's not intended to..I do both flat glass and auto...mainly auto now...the difference between the 2 in my opinion is flat glass is like painting a barn , auto tinting is like painting a Picasso. If you havn't done auto B4 , never heatshrunk, take panels apart , etc..I wouldn't start now..do this repeat customer a favorand sent him to an automotive tinter..he'll be happier in the end...and trust me, so will you . I don't discourage you from auto..just not to jump right into it with a repeat paying customer for a bit till you get some friends and families cars under your belt

But just suppose I was going to do the job anyway, can you give me some constructive info?, I am not uninteligent and there is a first time for everyone, I know working on a compound curve surface is not easy, and I could tell you about Vinyl jobs I do which my peers shy away from.

I also realize that Window film is more delicate than vinyl, I do heat shrink cast and callandered Vinyl to fit around complex body mouldings, wrap around door edges etc, and I have a very good DeWalt variable heat gun which goes right down to 50c.

I do plan to do some friends cars but this guy really wants his rangie done and has 4 (4) other vehicles including a Warrior 4 x 4, he runs a local garage I do regular work for him and his customers vehicles.

As to sending him to a reputable tinter, they are very thin on the ground in my part of the country, the only guy I know of locally does not appear to be taking on any tinting work at the moment, and he is a sign-maker too.

In the UK we really don't have specialists who only tint cars, in fact the only ones I have come across are advertised on this web site

you need to listen to TW. he told you EXACTLY what you need to do. his comparison of painting a barn and painting a picasso is right on the money.
no one here is gonna hold your hand and walk you through this. especially if you have no experience in auto.
do this customer a favor, and yourself a favor, and pass this one on to another tinter.

The front door seals are really thick and tight. They can be removed really easiely like on a bug.
