scratches from stainless blades??

QUESTION.... I go to a job several months ago.. applied Drei to about 6 sliders. NEW SLIDERS I might add... So the job is complete, customer pays and is very satisfied. Presently she is calling in and complaining that I have scratched her glass. Now My Question finally... has anyone on this board ever scratched tempered glass with a stainless triumph blade? Or for that matter, a stainless Olfa blade?? I though the whole reason for stainless was because of the "no scratch" factor, am I right or am I wrong??... and my second question is that of... I see new construction all day long, or just new glass... it is VERY RARE that I find a piece of glass new or old, that is scratch free.. maybe with all the sand in florida makes it easier to scratch in manufacturing and or installation.. Anyway, any input would be appreciated.. hmmmmmmm.gif hmmmmmmm.gif hmmmmmmm.gif

did you notice the scratches before performing the job?

You can scratch tempered with a dull blade or if there is debris on the glass such as overspray from a sand texture or something simliar. To avoid problems I always inspect the window for scratches before I start prepping. If there is a problem, I show it to the customer. Also, I always lift my blade off of the glass and do not drag it backwards over what I have already scraped.

I do the same thing... left to right, or top to bottom.... as I said b4, new glass that I see 6 out of 10 times the glass is scratched from manufactuer. or installation for that matter. I too Inspect glass the Majority of the time, and will also point out flaws or imperfections to the customer. This job I just simply didnt see anything prior instalation. The present scratches are stated to be minimal on the inside with MINIMAL as well on the outside. But the customer believes I did it. BECAUSE... remember they were new???? well, she had a window cleaner come out and clean her previously TINTED windows, somehow someway, they either scratched her film or the glass... SO she went back afer the mexican cleaning brigade, got their company to replace all 6, yes 6 sliders, and pay to retint them. With Drei to match her old film... Now that tells you a little to describe this nasty boca a$$ beotch.

Jeeees, never had it happen with a new or newer ss blade! I hope when you see the “scratches” it wasn’t your fault! Maybe some bad glass--- I’ve seen plenty of that but you would have noticed it when you were scrapping it. Good luck! broken.gif

I think the film accentuated minor scratches on the inside that maybe my nek!d eye could not see..

Unfortunately you have committed the cardinal sin in flat glass of scraping tempered glass with any sort of blade....never do it!

Put it down to inexperience and you are up for the damage mate.

Two things come to mind...

Too much pressure when trimming the film (dull or sharp, carbon or stainless)...

and for scraping during cleaning:

yes...it's happened to me a couple times. new construction glass is getting shiattier by the day. and yes it was a new blade, i didn't pull the blade backwards, and I inspected the glass prior to cleaning. there are companies that just flat out make shiatty windows.

tempered glass no matter with a stainless steel triumph still scratches sometimes like blade said. I have scratched it too with ss blades. The glass has debris on it and also it is just being made sh|ttier and sh|ttier

First thing you need to determine, are the scratches on the inside or outside.

People tend to notice things they never saw before after we finish. The customer is no longer looking through the window, they are looking directly at the window. Did you notice scratches when installing? If so, you should have informed the customer.

When cleaning, did you hit debris, or hear noise? That debris or noise most likely was ash from the tempering. It is imbedded in the glass. Once it breaks off, it will scratch the glass.

Tempered windows are easier to scratch than annealed.

Hope you know a reasonable glass installer.

interesting would be, is, how those of you who dont use blades on tempered, hhow you removing old film Uhhcopy.gif

Don't ring me...ring Blade. duck.gif Flaugh.gif

As Tman said, you would have heard a rough sound to the glass when cleaning and the blade sort of drags over the window as if it is going over fine grit sandpaper. Then you know you are up S creek without a paddle.

we work with a very good account (glass company) which we do alot of safety/anti graffit film installs for them in shop and onsite at specific locations. we handle alot of new glass, everytime we clean, i run my hands through the glass dry and wet, and you can feel the ruff surface, like as if it has overspray. like new cars, ntohing is every perfect. they get scratched no matter what. and sometimes, us tinters got to be careful, cause people tend to lay problems, flaws, bullshiat our way

For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face:
now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
