Box Star Kit - worth it??

From a catalog I got from 44Tools..

"Box Star Kit

The new Box Star utilizes an innovative slitting blade which is completely overmolded so that only a very small part o fthe blade is exposed. The Box Star slitter also comes with a convenient roll re-winder end cap so that when you slit the film, you don't have to roll the film back onto the core with your hand."

I don't see it on their site... I was just wondering if anyone has one or knows how it might work...

It looks kindof like a normal box mounted film slitter, but it must be more cause it's $60 where as the bmfs is only $10. smile22.gif

The only thing we use is the cutters and they get lost to easy .

And yes the blades are covered up but nothing special the roll back system , never use it.

The problem with all box slitting devices is that your carton box of the film is always to "slappy"
or to light in weight that the box moves while pulling the film or the side of the box bends and you donot get a clean cut .

60 bucks is kind of steep. I’ll take a look at the covered blades tomorrow if I’ve got the catalogue. If the box is held in place does the roll device work any better? bling-bling.gif coffee.gif

I have the box star it works well

The whole 'recoil' thing is more trouble than its worth

You do get a nice straight cutoff so i say its worth the $60

To solve the issue of the box moving I bought 2 - 3" thread bolts 4 - large fender washers and 2 - wing nuts. Then I mounted the card box to the top of my six foot ladder (like a film handler) works great I can mark down up to 60" on the ladder and pull to that mark

A six foot ladder will allow you to mark down to 70-72 inches

Paperclip w/ a razorblade is tucked away here in the tool tip section. Works as good as a boxstar without the re-rolling -imo

Does it give you at least two straight edges that wouldn't need to be trimmed?

Pulling from the box now I just get the one factory edge... which granted isn't a huge deal, but sometimes when there are window locks that are too tight to get behind and you need the factory edge, it would help if I could cut an edge that straight so I could pull out less film for the same window... since I could cut it differently.

Yeah, you can get a pretty straight cut. If you can pad your roll to prevent side to side movement, then the only thing you have to worry about is if the film is rolled evenly on the tube.
Devil with bad attitude
With the FH I get so much roll drift left to right it ain't funny.
It does a 6.5 out of 10 job IMHO.

I'm going to re-engineer something with an industrial machinist I know.

The concept needs an "extreme makeover." Flaugh.gif

As for the blade in the box.....well gee it's hard to beat in the hands of a seasoned tinter and costs zip.

Unfortunately at this time 44tools has taken the box star kit from our website. We were only able to get a couple of box stars in which promptly were sold. Since early December we have had issues getting the product from the manufacturer and at this time we have had to put a hold on any orders for the box star. We apologize about any problems that this causes or has caused any of our customers that had the product on order or were looking to place one on order.

We do still carry the box mounted film slitters

I have the box star but I use it on my tint rack, I got some aluminum channel and glued a cloth tape measure to it and use dthe box star blades. it works perfect, I like it with chevy PU windows, they are 19.5 " and I can cut with minimal waste two windows out of a 40" roll of film. it has cut down on my waste

I eyeball everything, no kidding. I can cut the width and length within a couple of feet. hahaha

I like my boxstar.

For the price it was well worth it.

It didn't do that great of a job on the 6 mil I used with it though....but what can you expect?

For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face:
now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
