Full Version: NEW GTI
Has anyone done the rear window of the new GTI. I have been reading in the VW forums that the rear window is a real pain. Is this true? And if it is any suggestions on how to make it easier.. Thanks
I am in Florida right now at a Volkswagen dealership so I will get ahold of one tomorrow and let you know.
they are not an easy shrink.
Current model is one horrible POS rear screen to film.
Thick as a brick dot matrix edge. I don't look for that type of work anymore when I don't have to. Devil
i tinted an 06 gti not a week ago and had no problems. eazy peezy
I dont know what gti you did but the new mk 5 golf - is by no means easy-peasy..IMO

i just hate tintn vws in general
I did an 06 GTi today. The rear glass sucked. Period. The sides were pretty basic though. Just some felt to deal with.
JUST FINISHED NEW GTI ...TRIED AND TRIED TO GET THAT ONE PIECE FOR THE BACK .....RAN OUT OF TIME THE KID CAME HE WAS GOIN BACK TO COLLEGE. PUT IT ON WITH TWO PIECES NOT AS CLEAN LOOKING AS ONE BUT IT HAD TO GO. FOR YOU GUYS THAT HAVE DONE IT IN 1 PIECES WHAT METHOD YOU USE. TIME TO GO RELAX
I use powder on those...I have done about 6 now - they are a pain.
2 ways of doing it, make your side anchors tight and come into the clear glass and this can help or make your side anchors right to the edge of the glass but shape the anchor so it is less at the top and bottom ( like a half circle). This allows you to gather a big finger and shrink it tight in the matrix area - burn it if nessessary - it will tighten up the rest of the fingers and make it do-able. Naughty So your saying kinda make like a bigger H then try to shrink it up?? When first started to tint i used the baby powder with the h ...now i usually use the dryer sheets with a whit card ...on this car i tried both methods baby powder worked better but in the end i just didnt have the time to keep messing around with it.. Im looking foward to trying it again tho
another way to go at it is to leave a few small finger on the sides that you can heat up after the install...this way..you dont have as much film to shink on the top and bottom..making for a little easier shrink

neither...i use the soap method..no card...no glove
Squeege the top so theres no finger and move the larger fingers to the bottom and shrink
It works i dont know why but its much easier QUOTE (Johnnytint @ Aug 28 2006, 10:34 PM) [*]426771[/*] Squeege the top so theres no finger and move the larger fingers to the bottom and shrink It works i dont know why but its much easier you must not be talking about the 07'...

How i do it..and some do it differently...i take a clean shop rag..fold it up to the about the size of your hand...spray the rag with water...not to much to soak it..just enough to moisten...then i take a bar of DOVE soap..and rub it on the rag...you will get a white paste like substance on the rag...then...wipe your back window with the rag..you should see white haze form on the window ..and you are done... I do 2 pecs always
This window sucks about as much as the new rabbit.
Too much time spent on the Rabbit
Tint God, so once you have ragged the cloth with soap. Do you make a H or cover the whole back window?

Well after this post I will be trying attempt #4 on this rear glass. I am getting my ass kicked and I really do not want to call the customer and tell them I cannot do it.
if you can do it in 2. I have done only 1 rabbit and it took me a couple of times to get it in one.
no.... I cant do this car in 2. My splicing skills are not good enough and this car has thin defroster lines. Anyway the owner of this car is very particular and I want it to be done right.
..... Which is why Im going to call him now and admit defeat.
what film are you using? The first time i tried i used Global, not the best shrinking film then i used suntek hp. I also used dry soap method.
Lay the film.
Then shrink it a lot without touching it. Then shrink it a second time and smooth as you go. Helps to take off the wiper. Some places you have to tug on the film while you heat it. It's a PITA. Then, have fun trying to get a clean install because of all that plastic in the way.
I take the film to the edge of the glass and drag a big finger to that area, and shrinkthe $|-|17 out of it - burn it on purpose - this tightens up the rest of the film. leave it long and lift and pull.
It's a pain but you'll get there in the end. I did one this week in madico onyx 35%

It was Suntek Carbon18. great shrinking film..... I got the 4th try shrank good enough, but after I made it past all the plastic and got it squeegeed out, It just was not clean enough for my shops standards. I admitted defeat on this one. Id rather go thru the embarresment of calling the customer and telling them I cant do it, then have some shotty work out there with my name on it. He completly understood. Also, I think part of it was me not feeling good today. Yesterday I had BAD food poisoning which had me puking for 18hrs. QUOTE (ECANDSOUND @ Aug 27 2006, 04:30 PM) [*]426404[/*] ........ Just step back, knock back a shot, hit the bong or what ever you do to relax, and think about it. You gotta be attacking it wrong, thats all. 'Cmon man, I got faith in ya!!! suntek should lay in one piece on that car...
i put mmm cs 05 on a gti about a month ago, and cs is not as easy to shrink as ST. should go on your next attempt. like others said anchor the H into the clear section of the window on the sides and leave a finger that can be heated out after installation. i used the dry, glove method. no powder just wiped off and a moist H to anchor.good luck...
Dude, the only way you are going to learn is if you don't give up easily
Failing that, you have to do it in 2 pieces. Good learning experience . I two pieced one a few months ago, be careful, the defroster flakes like a motha
This car is a dirty hizzo.
I did the lift an pull for the rear glass... I hated every minute of it. You nail the bottom and then you gotta deal with the retarded top section! CHARGE MORE! ![]() ![]()
Leave some more film on the sides, and you will have more area to shrink. That car still sucks donkey n*#s though
i one piece them all day long maing leave the top and bottom long shrink it out that way maing
I hate those BG's

this is the first new body I have done, 1st attempt on the rear window was no good. 2nd go went well, leave film long to pull bottom. With the spoiler cut film to fit & leave top sides long to pull any way you can. qdp ch.

after the first 2 these rears are a cake walk no problem leave it long shrinks right up man
