Full Version: Start an upholstery shop in illinois
I'm starting an automotive upholstery shop in my home town. Im also thinking about tinting windows.. I have only tinted like 12 cars so I was wondering if you tinters / upholstery guys think this will work well together.
I think it would!! where are you at in IL??? If your close to Chicago maybe we could collaborate....
Works for me.....has been for several years now, just don't spread yourself too thin.
Sometimes I can't get to the sewing for keeping up with the other stuff.
I'm actually in taylorville. I've been passing out flyers so far and thats about it is pretty hard starting out right now but im sure it will work I haven't ordered tint yet to start tinting windows just for the fact i want the upholstery going a little bit better b4 i add more to it.

Tint detect - How long have you been doing upholstery and where are you located? I'm in N.Carolina. I've been installing leather and such for around 8- 10 yrs. I bought a Consew 226 about 2 years ago, cause the yankee b!tch that owns a shop up the street pissed me off. I still have some difficulty with sewing but with the help of another trimmer across town I have learned enough to be a pain in that b!tches a$$......
cool people around here don't like paying for leather its pretty prices from my distributors.... I'm jsut trying to start my own shop worked in upholstery for 3 years now.. any advice for a new shop owner?
I understand that, in addition to actually doing upholstery, window tinting, cleaning service, and custom signage are very good add-ons.
Tint detective, if you can, check out the new Servo motors. With them, you can slow the machine down to one stitch at the time, which is great if you're doing some fancy top stitching or just need to be careful. You can also go fast with them, very nice and very quiet. R1chardpease, I see that nobody has replied. Check out www.carrscorner.com/yabbse as they are very helpful. You can get a free membership with limited access, or a paying membership (it's only $50) and have access to a lot more. I don't regret my $50.
richard please contact me...in IL and need upholstery for my custom shop...phone number on my website and cant private message ya

How do you use the edit thing here?
QUOTE How experience did you start out with? Sorry, it was suppose to be " What experience did you start out with"? QUOTE (wilz @ Feb 27 2007, 05:24 PM) [*]483837[/*] Tint Detective, How experience did you start out with? I started as a trim tech. in '90, I didn't start sewing until a few years ago.... Sometimes, I bite off a little more than I can chew, but luckily I have a more experienced trimmer working for me now, that has the experiece needed to do it..... How long have you been at it?? Here's an example...
I feel at home here. Have no experience at all. This custom fabrication and upholstery thing have always facinated me especially when we do not have anyone out here who is into it. I love to pick and learn the whole art of it but i just don't know where to start from.
Dam, that upholstery is cool man. You got great skills.

Buy yourself a used heavy duty sewing machine, go take some lessons and start doing what you can on friends and relatives cars and even furniture, you'll know within a few jobs if you have a nack for it... What's your location???
Tint detective, Is there anywhere i could resource from to learn some basics?
Well, my location is in the South Pacific, a dot on the global map somewhere beside Australia. I probaly should be be looking for some basic lessons in trimmings i guess to start of with. How do you come up with your designs?
If you don't have a sewing outlet or some other place to take sewing lessons, buy yourself a book on upholstery, there are many to choose from.
They can help you with the basics, the rest is up to you. One thing......... Don't put your fingers under the presser foot....
Thanks, i really do appreciate your helping me out here.
