Full Version: whats adequate safety film for storefront vandalism
I will be going on an estimate for a chain of liquor stores. I have always applied security film for hurricane protection(8-10mil), but Im not all too sure as to what may be adequate for vandalism. i.e. snatch and grab.. Any of you guys able to recomend the best mil to protect against bricks or something of that sort? Im guessing its 1/4 tempered. I will be attaching it with 995. Thanks for your input!
I've always done 8mil with an attachment, usually gullwing though, but I know it's been done with 995.
You can pull a GSA Level 1 with 8mil and 995 on single pane tempered 1/4" so that's got to say something about it's holding power. 8mil should be fine but if you are paranoid, go 15mil with an attatchment system and it's going to take a vehicle to get through it.
I have mostly done 8 mil with wetglaze (995) or 8 with framegard and with the doors I will take the glass out and apply 8mil interior and 7mil exterior and when I put it back in the frames I will 995 both sides of the caps that hold it in.
OK then lets stir this pot of stew up a bit
You should use the multi-layered product it's the BEST (pmuzik @ Nov 16 2006, 03:04 PM) [*]448136[/*] OK then lets stir this pot of stew up a bit You should use the multi-layered product it's the BEST 8mil and 15mil are multi-layered Einstein... So 4 mil is more adequate protection for anti-intrusion than 8 or 15mil?
3M 4mil is the b*mb!!!!!!!!!!!
For smash & grab, anything over 8 mil is overkill IMHO, and unless its tempered, no attachment nescessary.

although I didnt want a 3m arguement once again, we all know its junk.. I am now interested in any clips, or company info where it shows 4 mil cannot withstand high wind gusts. Anything?

Marketing dept's can create plenty of literature but the real deal is what the testing labs conclude. I'd love to see more reports from independent testing, NOT just the Dade Co small bb test report. If the stuff is as good as they claim, then there should be plenty out there to substantiate it.
I always love to get in the discussion between micro-layer and multi-ply...
You can always get your hands on some of the micro-layered stuff and compare for yourself. Take a sample of micro-layered and a sample of multi-layered, put a 1/2 - 3/4 inch slit at the edge on one side of each (centrally located), grab a hold on either side of the tear and tear as fast as you can move your hands away from each other... like you would tear a piece of paper. The result will be the same. Events that call for the use of safety film occur in micro-seconds, not micro-minutes. Furthermore, most people who want film applied don't want anyone else to know it is there, so it must have absolute clarity. But from my experience better 10 mil minimum. But may be people are very agressive here 7 mil = 4 mil IMHO in safety case.....It's one ply ....same physic, only thicknes, but it don't work, it don't... All these tests are good for lab rats who got salary, for lab owners whio makes big bux issuing these papers..But.... Life is life. When customer ask me reccomandation I ask next questions: 1. How expensive thigns on window and how painfull will be if they will be borrowed. 2. How fast can arrive guards. After that we can think. Because if there is one bottle of beer on window no idea use expensive films. But if Konyak which cost $1000 ........... better take it from this window anycase I think in every case situation must be analysed. Safety films = SERIOUS MATTER, I don't kidding in this cases
For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face:
