Electronically tinted windows at push of a button?

Full Version: Electronically tinted windows at push of a button?
Uh oh, it's made of ceramic.
Performs well though .09 SHGC It will be interesting to see how this technology progresses. Some needs: -Cost needs to come down -Window sizes need to increase -Uniformity needs to be better -ROI needs to be the same or less than the warranty
Almost reminds me of KITT from Knight Rider.
I'v heard BENZ is looking into this stuff aswell..
It will be alot of money to add it. We'll see...
I would have that on my house if the warranty was better, at least film has a lifetime warranty
Yea the window tinting installer is a dyeing breed. Much like the dinosaurs.
naaaaaa.......
QUOTE (TINTZEUS @ Dec 29 2006, 04:45 PM) [*]460452[/*] naaaaaa....... But will there be enough demand to support a living?
yea, gotta be good.
SAGE Electrochromics (SAGE Glass) is about 15 minutes north of my house.
What I find funny is their building isn't covered in this stuff to my knowledge. It doesn't look like it anyways.
Thats cool...you should go in there DD...check it out.....
burn it down pooky?
birn that mutha down
They don't need no water, let that mutha phuka burn!
tint at the push of a button....and when the power goes out?
QUOTE (LukeNukem @ Apr 6 2007, 06:06 AM) [*]497460[/*] tint at the push of a button....and when the power goes out? Without power it would go to frost. I got to see this product at the glass expo in Atlanta. Pretty cool stuff but very expensive and the warranty is only like 5 years. We have had a couple of calls for it but never put any up. Just too expensive.
All I have to say is that if a school can afford to use those windows, you people in Minnesota are paying too much in taxes or not getting a big enough cut of the lottery lol
That product is scary though, makes you wonder where this industry is going to be in ten years. QUOTE (southerntinting @ Apr 7 2007, 07:51 AM) [*]497687[/*] Without power it would go to frost. This type of window has been around for several years.
3M had a similar idea in early 90's, then GE played around with the technology for awhile, but neither of them are doing anything about it anymore. Probably to many problems or not enough money in it.
Yeah, DTI/MSC was looking at this too in the late 90's, but the cost was way too high to produce.
No worries for the window film industry!
DTI/MSC was looking also for photochromic....But nobody saw the results
doesn't the maybach have the moonroof that changes from clear to tinted at the push of a button?
It will be a long time before that goes on cars for sure and probably to costly to add to an existing building or enough of them to make a difference in work for tint shops. I'm sure it would'nt even go into many new structures as well.

hmmm, i was chatting with mike smith (prez. iwfa at the time) a while back about this stuff. according to mike, sun-gard has already designed variable vlt film. he wouldn't elaborate much, but did mention that it's electronic, and can be "programmed" to change when you cross state lines to make your vehicle conform. i'll believe it when i see it.
also, i was reading in "popular mechanics" mag a few years ago, about dual pane auto glass with a viscous fluid between the panels. as the need for darker glass becomes apparent, the panels move apart drawing more fluid making the glass darker. our days may be numbered...but 'till then, tint everything!!!
Same story I heard from Solar Gard at 1997.....

This is old news its called a sunshade hahahahahahah

Seen this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgoEIeCBiX4 on UTUBE! The vid if fictional at this time.
But, I do think it will be reality at some point. It most likely will start as an expensive after market option. Then the dealers will pick it up as an option. Will start on the expensive cars, then over time even the KIA's will have it available.
A while back I was in a law firm that had the glass walls of the conference room with shade control. Was pretty cool, when they had a meeting ect. The clear glass walls would fade to a white frost. It was neat to see for the first time.
I doubt it will happen with cars. Tinting laws being diffrent in every state, and giving the car owner the ability to change the windows from clear to dark at the push of a button will stop it from seeing production.
The cops would have a conniption if it did. Maybe we will get lucky and it will be banned. QUOTE (tintlife @ Dec 21 2007, 01:04 PM) [*]573503[/*] I doubt it will happen with cars. Unless there was a variable control locked in when it gets shipped to each state only being able to be adjusted my a dealer and auto mechanic since they would all be honest about it
Tinters are not going to go anywhere. It is just like bf goodrich or any other tire buster and maker getting worried about flying cars. We are far from that and far from glass tinting its self. If the market makes a sudden change we can always learn the new business. Change, adapt, and grow. Nothin to it
Its the residential and commercial glazing that we need to be concerned with. Autos are in the clear
I think if I ever bid against this crap I'll point out the warranty, and point out how much easier it is to replace bad film as opposed to replacing bad windows.
yeah, when the price comes down on this technology...it's take a bite outta our industry. really wouldn't be a problem if the major film manufacturers would get on tv like makers of other fine products do.
film technologies has already patented electonic film...changes shades as you cross state lines to conform even. i'm not really into electronics...might make for some cool graphics though.
I would'nt sweat it. The pricing on this will be too great for many years to come in comparison to the cost of filming
For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face:
