Full Version: new shop starting, any advice?
hey everyone. i'm starting a new shop in marshalltown ia. running into a few problems. loan fell through but i have a couple thousand saved up. i've been tinting for awhile out of my garage but nobody knows where i'm at so it's time to get a building. i live in a town with about 25,000 people my total money out each month with lease, insurance and utilities is about 1500. so i guess my question is i have enough for the first month saved up. if i get into the building i'm going to need to tint about 12-13 cars in a month. the building is on the busiest street in town and i also sell accesories and do custom work, i have my hands in memphis audio so i sell that if someone comes in wanting that. i have a few memphis products on hand for display. also able to sell wheels but have none for display and probably not able to afford any for display. so my question is do you guys think that i could make it and if so any advice would be great. thanks in advance.
Well I did everything out of my house for about 5 years, then I contaplated getting a building, and in my area (Phx AZ) WAY TOO MUCH money so I started doing everything (90-95%) mobile.
If you can get a bldg that cheap I would say go for it, but 1 thing to consider electric, water, sewer, garbage, gas etc etc etc on both places, someone once told me if you are going to get into a buisness on your own you should have at least 6 months of your bills saved up in order to do it and not struggle, not always the case, but good advice none the less. Sounds like you could definitely benefit from a "Business Management" course, first. Always go into a new venture prepared. Good Luck
I would like to first say Hello. This is my 1st time posting. I would say go for it to Kreativekustoms, This month was 1 year for my shop, I started off with just a little more than what your planning to start with. And on a not so busy street. Now 1 year later I'm still kicking. It will be a little slow till people know your their. And it won't be easy on a low budget but it is possible.
Good Luck.
I would think you would need a little more the just 1 month's rent in the bank. You are starting out in the end of the off season which is good in a way but you will need some money to float on until the warmer temps get here. Might want to do something like 237 did, without the over head of the shop you can do more until you get to a place where you have enough clientel to keep a shop open.
Not trying to discurouge you in any way, just some things to think about. If I were you I'd spend that money giving more visibility to your current location. Spend at least a year doing it out of your house (provided you have it set up as a shop!) Bank enough to keep you afloat for at LEAST 6 months, THEN decide whether to open a retail shop! Personally, I closed my storefront a while ago, converted my car and a half garage into a proper tint shop, stuck a nice sign out front (I'm zoned for it) And advertised, marketed, networked and now I would NEVER go back to a storefront. But at least have enough money for inventory& the rest of your overhead to be able to keep afloat for 6 months
For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face:
