What method is the most cost effective?

I'm trying to figure out what would actually end up being cheaper regarding film roll sizes....
Let's say we have a typical 4 door car. Each roll-up needs 36" of film to cover it. The back 1/4 glass can be done with the excess from the front roll-up. The rear window needs 60" or 5 feet of film... just for argument sake. That's 17 feet of film.
Ok, now without stating a price, I'm finding that if you simply use a 40" roll, you only need to use 11 feet of film to cover this car because for the roll-ups you would generally pull 36" of film, cut the width down the middle and you have 1 side of the car done.
I'm finding this is actually significantly cheaper per car by just using a 40" roll as opposed to using film off of a 20" roll and a 40" roll.
What am I missing? I thought it was cheaper to have your rolls broken down to 18, 20, 24, 36 and 40... Or, at least that's what I was told.

i only carry 36". Works for pretty much anything...b/g...no problem....side windows...usually can split it in half and do 2 windows...if its a 1/2 ton that has windows bigger than 18", i just lay the tint sideways. Sometimes though i do wish llulu would sell it in 40"

I always keep 20" which will do most roll downs and 30" for the BG, this also covers me for the larger roll downs. I keep a couple of 36" rolls for the monster BG's.

i carry llullu and i have 10's 18's, 20's, 24's, 25's, 30's, 36's, and 40's. the 10's are just limo and the 25 is just 3M. basically i carry almost all sizes. i figure its tint and if you do a lot of biz you will end up using it eventually.

Yeah, but have any of you actually sat down and figured out what was more cost effective? Let's say you can save $12 a car by just using 40" rolls... is it worth it? Also, is it really more cost effective?

I use a 40 inch roll and split film in the middle for the rollups. I used to just use 36in roll but i hate shrinking fingers to the side when the window is taller than 18. then i carry a 20 and 24 inch roll of 5% for trucks.

I'm talking about an entire car, not just roll-ups. If you just use a 40" roll for the entire vehicle you use 11 ft of film. If you use a 20" roll for the roll-ups and a 40" roll for the back window, you end up using 17 ft of film. 5 ft of the 40" roll for the back window and 12 ft of the 20" roll for the roll-ups. When I add these numbers up with the prices I get charged from my distributor, I would save $12 a car by just using a 40" roll to do the work.

Ok if you say so, yes you use more linear ft off of a 20" to do the doors, but youor still using the exact same SQ FT to do the job. If your dist isn't charging you 1/2 as much for a 20 as he is a 40 then theres a problem IMO

stocking a 24" and 40" makes good sense I would like to see a film Co. use their head and offer 22' and 38" from a 60" that would keep waste way down 700 cars a year at 12$ is $8400 bucks

Nevermind... I figured out where I went wrong on that. Using a 40" roll actually increases the cost by .12 per car.

Most (not all) major film companies price sheets Ive seen are a little cheaper by the square foot. I try to order 60" rolls cut to my preferences. I am with a company now that doesnt charge for cuts and usually the combined order of 60" rolls meets the quota for free shipping also.

I buy my rolls like this: 20" For single roll ups and small rear windows, 60" cut down the middle = 2 30" rolls for most rear windows out there and large truck roll ups, 40" or 36" for larger rear windows.
I save a ton of money with the 30" rolls! If you take a look at the height of rear windows most of them will fit on a 30" roll.

I get the side out of the 20" and the 40 is for back glass and oversized rollups. It's the same if you split the roll 20/20 for the sides, just more film on hand.
For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face:
now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
