Film rolling off glass while cutting roll downs

Recently I've been installing some 4 mil, 6 mil on cars and a little Llumar.
Man, I really cannot stand liner side in rolled film. It just tries to fall off the glass!
So I now cut out the driver's side window on the passenger side.
Then I cut out the passenger side on the driver's side.
Then I install both.
Works rather well unless you screw up the install and have to cut a second piece. Then you're back to square one and having it roll off the glass.

I've only ever had the occasional problem with it wanting to fall off the wall glass .Whenever I have a roll of film that's like that..after cutting the peice out on a rolldown door, when I go to bring it over to the wall glass, I simply reverse it and leave it there until it's ready to install, when it's time to install, I just turn it around again I've never had a problem with not being able to control it while cutting it on the window since i'm right there working on it while doing so. I can see where that is a good tip if your having that problem

I just hate having to try to hold the stupid thing in place while cutting.
Llumar isn't bad about in the summer, in the winter it can try to fall off a lot.
But 4 mil/6 mil is a different story. It's hard to keep it from rolling up while you're cutting.

Hey I have an idea! Since both doors are the simply opposites, just put the one that tries to roll off up first then the other one will hold the first one up. If yer not double cutting, yer wasting time and getting waterspots on both sides of the car. Just be sure to tack the film down good, as it can slide during cutting!

Cutting 6 mil is hard enough. Double cutting 6 mil would suck.

It's an acquired touch for sure. I have cut as many as 44 doors at one time. took a while to line them all up, but after that , 22 trucks-- BAM BAM BAM ! No it wasnt 6 mil, though We try lots of things. some fly, some flop. the important thing is to never stop trying new things. That's how you develop your style to what works best for you!

there is a demand for safety film on vehicles where you are... seems worthless to me

I NEVER cut security film directly on the door/glass for 2 reasons:
1- The problem you have with the film trying to back roll, putting the film with the liner inside and cut the opposite side is a work around
2- You will NOT get a good cut this way, let alone, an appropiate cut for this type of film
This is how I do it:
- Take a piece of liner (actually we use tinted film) and cut the pattern, making sure you leave lot's of film downwards and left and right (by cutting one side, move the film towards that side so it overlapses an inch or so and then cut the other side).
- Use that pattern as a template and cut the security film with your knive or better yet, some sccisors.
- Install

I'd imagine installing 15 mil like you guys do is a whole another ball game.

Hey Darkdan, can you shrink that stuff? Or have you guys been doing side windows with security film. Just curious, haven't done much security stuff.
darkdan
Jun 26 2007, 04:51 PM
It shrinks, slowly.
You could do an easy back window with it, but I just use regular film on the back.
I haven't had to shrink a side window yet. Since it's thicker it compresses a little bit and small fingers will just squeegee down with no problem. Large fingers just wet shrink it.
Sadly, panel/gasket pulling is a must. =(

It can be done, but if you put a little crease on the side it can be very hard to get out.

It can be done, but if you put a little crease on the side it can be very hard to get out. If you are serious about security film installation, it CAN'T be done!!!! You MUST remember that a security film installation is very different from your normal tint job. The film MUST go deep into the frame to offer some sort of protection. There is NO WAY you can install a properly cut film without at least pulling the panels and gaskets.

Did my first auto S&S yesterday as part of a test, and guess what? Did all car with no prob! Took all the pannels and rubbers out but not the windows, shrinked the BG ( slowly BTW ) and all went sweet! It was 4 mil so not that hard IMO! just to keep you informed! Not my market...Yet

I have been having tons of problems with the 3M colorstable (35% in particular) doing that especially pulling in a car in from the 100 degree weather. This is definitely a good solution . Should have thought to post it.... It could have possibly been my first TOTW!

I had posted a tip on here once about using little magnets fron the hardware store to help hold the film while you cut , especially with the Llumar I use . The magnet works great and doesn't damage the film or the vehicle .

I agree and also think to get the best out of the film you would need to take the glass out. That being said I have quite a few friend in the construction business and smash and grabs are a very big deal to us. I had a friend lose $3500 worth of tools and he wanted something a little better than regular tint. I have said that it will only slow them down but sometimes making it a little harder to get in might save your stuff. I guess its just the idea and a little peace of mind to have a little more protection especially when you combine that with a good alarm. I have only done it for close friends and don't think I would market it to the general public Bottom line if they want in their GONNA GET IN!!

Even with an attachment system with enough beating they can push the window into the car. With an attachment system they wouldn't be able to pull it out very well.
One sided attachment just bends they have to fold it over.
Keep in mind, the idea is to deter, not stop with S&S film. If they want in, they'll get in.
But thieves are looking for the easy score. If they wanted to work for it, they wouldn't be stealing.

I want to add that some cars don't have symetric windows. Did a Chevy Tahoe yesterday and the back windows are not the same, lost some material (2 x 15mil + tint) due to cutting the opposite side...

Yeah, I noticed that one day.
I cut a piece for the passenger side and it was fine. Then I cut the same sized piece for the driver's side and it was short. I was like, "WTF?"
So I used that piece for a roll down. Then I cut another piece and it was wrong again!
Finally I measured BOTH sides and realized the glass is the same, but the black painted border makes the window much smaller on the passenger side.
I learnt something new that day.
