Hey guys i am wanting to redo my headliner in my 84 GMC.
What type material is commonly used for this? Is it something that i can just go down to a fabric store and get?
I saw the "Heads up headliner kit" for DIY fixes. I thought about getting one of those but i cant find one in my town.

A fabric store should have what you need, it's just called headliner material.. It has 1/4in. foam backing, be sure you prep your surface and spray your glue on both surfaces...

I just ordered some black faux micro suade. I am going to give that a shot. i have seen it on new trucks and i want to see what it will look like on my trizzzzuck. I might even try and get jiggy with the door panel in areas or something. Anyways i am down for trying anything and getting jiggy with it

The stuff I use is called street suede, it looks like the real thing to the untrained eye. I'm doing a 2 tone with street suede inserts on my daughters civic. I'll show pics soon... you'll likey....

When you do it mdog lay the material over the board fold back half spray 1/2 board and material let it sit a few min and get tacky then lay down and smooth out then repeat on other side the trim off exess with razor (I have done plenty of headliners and find it easier to to one side at a time)

Then flip back over pop edges up then smooth from center out.... I do a ton of L.Rover Discoverys' and especially when I do them alone, I do them this way. If I think about it, next one I do I will video it...

YO TINT i got rid of my 96 back in feb. My brother and i traded trucks and he gave me 4K in cash also. He built me a new 350 motor and we put it in in march. So far its been a real dependable truck. It just needs LOTS of cosmetic things done to it. First thing i did was remove the yellowed body side molding and replace it with new. I then sanded and refinished the wheels. The interior was pretty jacked up. I am changing everything that was light tan to BLACK. Door panels, carpet, dash pad, seatbelts all that stuff is black now. I changed the metal part of under dash to the creme color on the outside of the bottom of the truck. I am trying not to spend too much money on it but i am doing what i can to make it look like a decent truck.

Here is what the interior looked like when i got it and after i had cleaned it up. here is what it looks like now. I want a all black interior. i need to get the seat done, fix the headliner with the fake suede i ordered and paint and install some of the interior plastic. Then i think i will be happy.

Sounds like you didn't use the correct adhesive or you did not apply it properly.

the warehouse you buy you vinyl headliner material or buy some from your local trim shop i like using the wood my friend uses foam
TTS
Apr 19 2009, 07:13 PM
I have used wood, foam, vinyl, abs plastic, etc.. pretty much whatever you want to make the design out of... You could even use a layer of headliner material and 'carve out' the logo or design you want to create a recessed design instead of a protruding one... get creative

sounds like a good plan..i hear a bunch of shops use contact spray adheisive for this but its like 100 bucks..is this true?

Contact your local upholstery supply outfit.... have them suggest a quality aerosol can or 2 for your project... it's not too bad (3.50 to 7 bucks a can typically) spray both surfaces evenly and let the glue dry really well before putting them togeather.... the glue is dry enough when you can touch it and it stays on the material instead of sticking to your hand.

good spray glue is select products...brand name
TTS
Apr 28 2009, 04:06 PM
select products is not a brand name... They offer a private label adhesive... DAP contact cement is a 'brand name' That is pretty much the standard
