Full Version: Vista
We went out yesterday and bought new laptops. Went all out. 64 bit processors, Vista Ultimate. We were like kids at christmas when we got home. We oohed and ahhhed at the cool things Vista does, and how cool it looks. Right up until the time I finally discovered that NONE of my entire Adobe CS2 collection (and I have MOST of 'em), or Premiere, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash, Acrobat, etc is compatible!!!! Very UNCOOL!. And Adobe is gonna do NOTHING! No patch, no workaround, Not even a REACHaround!! You gotta go out and buy The LATEST version of the CS3 Suites! Thats a CHUNK of change!!!
That sucks!! I bought my laptop one week before Vista came out so I didn't have these kinda problems. Might be easier for you to get a copy of XP so all of your stuff works. Its like getting a new cell phone by the time I figure it out its time to get a new one
But the more advanced users will have some much better advise for ya I'm sure QUOTE (solarspot @ Sep 16 2007, 10:04 PM) [*]545228[/*] That sucks!! Its like getting a new cell phone by the time I figure it out its time to get a new one But the more advanced users will have some much better advise for ya I'm sure IF I had bought a 32 bit machine, I would already have XP on it, But NOOOOOOOO! XP will not run on a 64 bit machine. And Vista runs BEST with 5 GIGS of RAM!!! We got 1 gig on each. WHY in the F*CK do they sell computers (And NOT the entry level ones, I assure you) with bare minimum RAM to run? I figured, OK I'll just run out and buy another 1 gig stick. NOOOOOO! That 1 gig in the machine is really 2 512meg sticks, one in each slot. I had to buy 2 1gig sticks to upgrade the memory.
Did you check with Adobe about an upgrade fee? It should be way cheaper than just replacing it. But it's still BS to pay anything to replace something that new.
I haven't used Vista yet and have no urge to. Some people love it, some people hate it... and I get the feeling that a lot of the "love it" crowd don't own much software, or at least nothing expensive enough to p1ss them off when they have to replace it or stop using it. I've used Linux before, but I don't accept stuff like Gimp as a Photoshop replacement, etc. Almost every time I read anything about Vista users having to un-break stuff, it makes me want to try a Mac when my XP computers need replacing. Plus, anytime MS puts out something new it, it seems like it's just a matter of time before someone discovers that either a) it's doing something naughty & invading privacy, b) full of security holes, or c) all of the above. I was excited when Windows 2000 came out and jumped right out of the 95/98/ME world. I held onto 2000 as long as I could before finally accepting XP... and now it looks like I'll be clinging onto XP as long as possible.
Its that kinda shiat that takes all the fun out of gettin new toys
Well sounds like you know way more than me hope somebody else can help ya
I hope you don't have to use them to run a plotter
The bad thing (for many of us) is that the average user will never see a problem with it, considering many people just buy the computer and use what's already there to browse the web and check email. They'll always just want whatever is current at the time and will never have to deal with compatibility issues.
But once you start spending hundreds/thousands on programs that you rely on to get important work done (like Photoshopping people on TD
Wait til the thing locks you out of your documents
Do you mean you're locked out of the My Documents folder? Or you're somehow being blocked from accessing certain file types... or folder locations?
i bought new gaming pc's for my shop and home and opted for XP pro because of this problem. i'll switch to vista when everything is compatible.

I can access windows and program folders but not my pictures, music or files that are mine QUOTE (Marco @ Sep 17 2007, 08:39 AM) [*]545362[/*] How did you get XP? If not, just go into set up, set the boot sequence to boot from CD first, and boot up with the XP cd. You'll have to reformat the HD, so I hope you got all the drivers for the motherboard (Chipset, LAN, Audio,Video). If you are willing to do that, you can install XP
Anyone interested, I found a "workaround" For the CS2 Adobe products and Vista!!! So far, works great.Contact me if interested.

Should I get an XP disk, if yes, which one the upgrade or full version pro or home? Get a full version, and boot from that after you change the boot sequence in setup. You will have to format the drive, losing everything in the process, but then you'll have XP. I am waiting for all the quirks to be worked out Haven't found many quirks, just alot of PITA asking permission to do anything. The upside of that is that nothing, not even a virus, can change the registry or make any system changes without your OK. The bad thing is that unless you get software written for Vista, you're gonna have issues with it. The visual effects are stunning, but hog memory like a BIOTCH, and slow down the machine REALLY bad. Looks like I'm gonna need at least 4 gigs of RAM for this thing to run like I want it to. QUOTE (Marco @ Sep 17 2007, 05:39 AM) [*]545362[/*] How did you get XP? I can access windows and program folders but not my pictures, music or files that are mine I can't help with being locked out however, you can run xp on vitrually any machine regardless of what they are saying about 64bit etc. If you fdisk it and take the drive down to nothing but zeros and ones and repartition it using a windows XP boot disk (or even 98) your xp should load and run no problem. If you have any questions on doing that just let me know.
I have had luck in Vista with compatibility mode. Right click the program icon go to properties, then compatibility. Mark run in compatibility mode I usually use xp2 and all is good.
trash that vista and run leopard on it
win2k > *
Yep, get a mac.
QUOTE (Marco @ Sep 16 2007, 11:15 PM) [*]545321[/*] I hope you don't have to use them to run a plotter Don't worry! The benevolent beings in Redmon are releasing service pack 1 around the middle of the year!! This will address all the compatability issues found thus far. (Better late than never). If you come up with issues in SP1, just wait another year or two, they'll come out with another service pack!! How in the hell can you release an OS when it's STILL in BETA? There ARE some things I like about Vista, but speed and convenience aint among them. One techhead at Microsoft DID let it slip about a new technology, hybrid hard drives (HDD)), that Vista is particularly adapted to. Seems that the "NEW" breed of computers will have these HDDs and will have up to 32 gigs of RAM, and Vista will run like a raped ape!! Until then? QUOTE (Marco @ Sep 16 2007, 11:27 PM) [*]545324[/*] Wait til the thing locks you out of your documents First thing you need to do is call toshiba and find out how much RAM your motherboard will support. (Probably 4 or 6 gigs) then buy the most you can cram into it. I bought 2 2gig sticks for under 200.00. Makes a HUGE difference. Then, try right clicking the "my documents" icon and run as administrator. All of the asking for permission protocols can be turned off, but it seems to me that as big a pain as it is, its a pretty good safeguard, since not even a virus can alter your registry without permission. I was told that I could not do that with OS-X. I have 2 250gig HDs in the desktop and wanted to have a dual OS machine. So I went with Ubuntu (linux, debian) and XP. Being able to have OS/X or Leopard would ROCK!!! I don't know WHY it wouldn't be compatible, but was told that it wasn't by more than 1 service geek. The comp is just circuitry, and leopard is just an OS.
You can run Leopard on a pc. You may have driver issues. I'm normally happy with linux. I didn't want Vista not big windows fan but it was installed on the computer and I haven't had a problem yet. Page on installing Leopard more info out there on have to do it.

I prefer AMD over Intel any day. I'm giving Vista until the warranty is out on this computer. If I don't like it any better by then, looks like it's gonna be Ubuntu for me. Or I'll drop another larger HD, and run a dual OS with XP. Micrsoft is scaring folks into switching to Vista by telling you they will no longer support XP. SO WHAT!! It is because of Microsofts tech support system that I know what I know about computers and software today. I wont dump XP (servicepack 2) And yes, like you, it took me a while to accept XP over 2000 pro. ( I have copies of both ) There have been ALOT of improvements in Linux with a program called WINE. I have Ubuntu on my desktop, and WINE, CS2 and my other windows based programs run fine. This revelation was given to me about 3 weeks ago (www.winehq.com) It's all open source and FREE (or very inexpensive). I don't care who ya are, if you own a computer these days, you'd better know the thing inside and out, and how to fix system problems yourself, or get ready to spend hours on the phone with someone you can barely understand. True customer service is going away rapidly. A POX on companies who "outsource".
