Tax Credit Expiring Soon for Energy Efficient Home Improvements

CARMEL—SOLARIS, a Carmel based window film specialist, is helping Indiana homeowners increase their energy efficiency, reduce utility bills and save more money. But time is running out to take advantage of Uncle Sam’s generosity. The Energy Policy Act of 2005 includes a tax credit for energy efficient improvements made to a primary residence and applies to solar control window film but will EXPIRE DECEMBER 31st, 2007!



“Homeowners can earn up to $500 by having VISTA® and LLumar® window film installed in their homes. Although most of our customers are concerned with protecting their furnishings from fading the energy saving benefits of window film are being brought to their attention with the new tax credit,” said Kevin Koval, owner of SOLARIS. “Unfortunately, the tax credit will be expiring soon with no pending legislation to renew the tax credit so folks need to take advantage of this now in order to reap the benefits come April 15th, 2008.”



Under section 25C of the Internal Revenue Code (I.R.C.), homeowners can receive a 10 percent credit on the costs of "qualified energy efficiency improvements," including solar control window film on windows, doors, and skylights. This tax credit applies to improvements made to a primary residence from Jan. 1, 2006 through Dec. 31, 2007.



Unlike a tax deduction, which reduces the amount of income subject to tax, a tax credit directly reduces the amount of income tax you have to pay. To receive the tax credit, consumers are required to submit IRS Form 5695 with their 2006 Income Tax Return. Copies of the dealer invoice and the manufacturer's certification statement should be saved. It's not like the tax credit is worth a lot in itself, but it sure does go a long way in the credibility department when you can show that the Federal Gov't recognizes window film as an energy saving solution. Hopefully, the tax credit will be here to stay...

I agree, let's hope it continues in 2008 and on...

I would like to see it continued as it may keep folks aware of what they can save, along with increasing value of the home at whatever time they may wish to sell.

is this tax credit seperate from other energy saving devices ?

I had to replace my heat pump last summer, with a trane unit that qualified for a 300$
tax credit. I dont know if that 400 sf of Drei I installed will add anything to my energy credits.

Better hold off on promoting window film as meeting the criteria for the tax credit. Seems the last spending bill reworded that section and there is a question on what the new phrase means. From what I gathered, the glass industry lobbyist reworded it.

All of the manufacturers assumed the amounts changed and not the requirements. I guess no one read the document.

I talked to Kent LeMonte about the tax credit and he told me there is no such thing for window film as of right now. I have had a couple of customers ask if my film qualifies for the tax credit b/c other companies in the area have told them theirs does. I think its comical when other companies just sell film with no research to back their claims.

huper still good and fyi it went up to 30% .know there is a gov program going on that expire's in 80 day ( if your house hold income is 50 or less and 4 or more people live there the gov will split the cost of matteral's with the home owner)
