mini cooper rear windows

ok on the back of my mini cooper (2004) the back side windows, and the rear hatch window all have the dot matrix on them. the back isnt bad, but the sides look horrible compared to the front door glass without dot matrix :(

now, this is the thing, im putting a wall in it, so the back side and rear hatch windows need to be blacked out, no one will be seeing out of them anyways.

i have 5% on them now which is fine when i put the wall in, but as i mentioned, the dot matrix looks horrible, and once i put the wall in, i wont be able to get the rear side glass re-tinted. so i need to fix this now! lol

what can i do? i need it completely black and it needs to match (from the outside) my 5% Llumar front doors.

my tinter is some little crap shop but he does good work for the money i pay him. but i doubt hes gonna do the glue thing with the dot matrix on my glass.

heres a pic of it (not my actual MINI)

but you can see how much better it would look if the tint was blended in with the rest of the window!

I have done hundreds of Minis and no matter what I do the dots still show after they dry. Not much you can do but paint it.

Just an idea. if you can find a roll of black vinyl big enough to cover the window thats the way to go. i use it on the backglass of mustangs and grand ams and stuff. just use it like tint and cover the whole window from the inside. its a little harder to work with than tint but not to bad. can't ever see the matrix after its done. hope it works for you.

if i paint just the dots, will the tint stick to that paint?

for instance. i tape up the whole glass on the inside, and tape right up to where the dots are, then i paint a light layer of black over the dots, filling in all the gaps in between the dots.

let that dry, remove tape, now i have a completely even layer of black around the border of the glass, filling in the gaps of dots.

i get it re tinted, and the tint will go over the paint. will that work?

grinning_and_saying_no.gif get it tinted first, if you want to go the paint route, then mask and spray, let dry, remove mask and there you go tint to edge (begining) of dots, with paint in the dot area beer.gif
pimpedout97x
how will that work? if i tint it first, the tint will be over the dots.

its not like a mustang rear window with dots all the way at the top in a big area. theres a border of dots around the edge of the whole glass, about 3 dots wide so not many dots, but enough to make a white line all the way around the glass.

similar to the windshield, see the black border? those are dots

I know what it is, tint it to the edge of the clear area of the glass (begining of dots) then mask, paint dots and your done
pimpedout97x
i see. sorry i missed that.

what if he tinted right over the paint?
Sprinter
then you'll probally have a slight white line going around it cause the tint will be on top of the paint
pimpedout97x
i figured that :(

so you think i should have him tint it first, then let the tint cure, then tape off the tint to the beginning of the dots, then paint?

i wish you could just scrape the dots off LOL

For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face:
now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
