The Ryk Shrink

Pages: 1, 2, 3

lilDetails
Well all, here is my video. Not a great quality, but it should show what I am doing. Heat and air under the film to hold it up and warm the underside. Then heat on the top to get the shrink. Check the time code and find that it is about 20 seconds per pocket and that makes for less than 2 minutes. Car is an 07 Nissan Altima. Not totally new but just a bit different. I have done 07ish Neon back glasses top and bottoms with the heat over and under. No pulling the top on them...
blade
that is different. shrinking under and over at the same time. haven't done it. i'm a one heatgun kinda guy Flaugh.gif pretty cool though. pretty quick too. thumb.gif
lilDetails
just one of those weird thoughts that worked out. James, shwusyrtnts, was blown away. It worked on the Global HP as well....and was only a few seconds slower on each pocket.

keeps film off of the glass and the film doesn't cool off.

IMO, that's exactly the way you do it, but you don't heat up the paint on the car as much... thumb.gif

lol2.gif I do, do most of em wet, but with the same style evilgrin.gif
lilDetails
I use to do it with one gun and blow under then work up and over. Let the pocket "close" off to hold the air, but this is even smoother than that and the heat is not on the paint long enough to matter. Look at the time. 20 seconds or less on each part.....and if you notice I lay my hand on the film immediately after the gun comes off. Not on it long enough to get it HOT....

Don't knock it until you try it...

Interesting, I use the same method for my 8 mil windshield tear offs, because you have to heat both sides. I'll have to try that with my sample roll of ATX thumb.gif

I like that. As mentioned, I too heat under the film when it starts to stick, but I never thought of doing it the whole time with another gun. thumb.gif And so the Ryk shrink was born beer.gif

I do that on some tops, but if I can pull the film up off the glass I just do it that way most of the time. I did do an 07ish Neon top with that method.....

And it worked for me on the Global HP. The only difference was I had to back off at the bottom as the film started to curl up. James pointed out that the Llumar is rolled the opposite and that was probably why Global did that.

Nice. I'll give it a shot tomorrow.

One question: What polish are you using to get rid of the marks and scratches caused by the heat gun cords banging up against the car over and over?
lilDetails
watched the vid again and sorry but the cords are not BANGING or even moving much on the car. Car was very clean so there was not dirt to make it an issue. If I have to reach far then I will drape the cords over my shoulders.

Never had it be an issue.

I've used a double heat gun for many yrs now ..I posted a video here a few years back similar idea blowing heat under, then chase it down, hakes only a couple of minutes on most back windows .. the only difference is you blow the heat in at the same time as chasing it down with the guns separate , I have 2 guns permanently strapped together , blowing the heat under first with both guns , then chase it down . Like you say though, takes way too long with one gun , wit h2 and the right flow, takes no time at all . So in essence if I was doing the bottom fingers first , I shoot heat up into the fingers underneath as the guns move up to the center of the bg, then heat the outside as the guns drop down again..same thing exactly..you separate the guns, I keep them together thumb.gif.

I've said it MANY times..don't knock 2 guns at once till you try it . I've had people try it and no like it till they watch me use them and then really like it ..once you get used to it ..going back to one gun sucks ..ask any 2 gun user Flaugh.gif

Nice video thumb.gif

I'll adress this question..I always have a drop cloth drapped over the rear of all trunks :I just pin it on either side then shut the trunk, I did have cord marks the first time I used 2 guns, never again after taking the 10 seconds it taked to put a drop cloth over the trunk (good idea IMO anyways..that way you can set squeges and such on the trunk without worry + when you lean over , etc. That's me though..if it's not a problem , then no need to do it orngbiggrin.gif

It's a fact that whenever you show a video to share knowledge , more often then not you'll have to defend some parts of what members view (not singling wndotint out at all , but rather speaking from experience ,that's why I don't shoot video much anymore..if you do..be prepared to back up procedure ) That's why I pipe up to defend the 2 gun shrink whenever someone films it Flaugh.gif

The dragging the cord

but,

when your working on some hi end cars with some hi end customers, trust.gif , you don't wanna drag cords on the paint, it's a good practice to get into, I had a lady with a white shelby mustang say I put scratches in her trunk lid when I tinted it hmmmmmmm.gif I'm looking, and looking, and finally she gets her nose on the trunklid @ an angle and says do you see all these (towel swirls in the clear coat) she said it was from me wiping the trunklid off rollin.gif wasn't me, because I never wiped your car down.
