Full Version: Traveling across state lines
I emailed a couple other tinting companies in my area to see if they were interested in using each other on bigger projects when needed. I got to talking to one of the guys and he said he was about to travel to NYC to install some 8mil security film on some banks. Evidently he just takes a bunch of rolls and goes from bank to bank showing them the product and its benefits and usually lands the job. He does it for about two weeks straight and claims to make a killing. Sounds like a gamble to me but he said he has been doing it for years. Any thoughts? Crywolfe, if your interested, I can give you his info, I believe he is looking for some extra help.
that's crazy. big focking nutz of the guy
He would be the Forest Gump of Window Film! The ultimate "cold call". .
Has this "industry" sunk that low? Don't answer. .I think I know the answer! I'm not saying dude aint getting work that way, but it's been MY experience that 99% of that kind of work comes out of the Corporate office. Banks are just like any other corporation like Books a million, Bed, bath & beyond, etc. I DID get 6 Barnett banks (back in the late 80's) sort of like that, but approval and funding had to be approved thru the Jacksonville Corporate office. I have never seen a store manager, or branch president who had that kind of descision making power. One of the reasons I am doing a bit of traveling around meeting folks, is to find tinters who can actually tint, AND work together. I have met SEVERAL that I know I will call when I get a project. It's kinda hard to call on someone, even someone who comes recommended, and have faith in them until you actually work with them. The ability to put together a team that has worked together previously is a GOOD thing. It's one thing to know a persons "Reputation", but the true test is working together. There are several here whom I would not hesitate to reccomend. That's why. .if you really want to invest in the cold call; you should concentrate on a Savings and Loan or Credit Union. They decide right there in your town rather than in Charlotte, NYC or other. Better bet. .go to the Grubb Ellis locations, Cushman Wakefirled, Trizec Properties , etc.etc.
Yeah, I was going to say in my town there's more small locally owned banks and credit unions than the big guys. Landing a USBank office on a cold call....unlikely. Landing Mom and Pop's Your Money in Our Safe....maybe.
i still say the guy has big nutz
Either he was blowing smoke up my azz or I misunderstood him when he said he usually lays about 10,000 sf of safety film on these little treks...He did sound a little pampas...you know one of those my sh!t dont stink, I can do anything better than you types.
Would he have to worry about licensing in other states though?
(darkdan @ Feb 17 2008, 11:06 AM) [*]594023[/*] Would he have to worry about licensing in other states though? When you do business like that, who needs a license or insurance? We dont need no steenkin licenses.......................We gots film!!! Also been my experience that it's kinda hard to get those jobs without proof of license AND insurance. Almost every contractor or corporation I've ever done work for has required at least 1 million in general liability. Going from state to state, man THATS alot of licenses to get.
hey v4v,
talk about cold call... I subbed for a company in Florida who had a phone room.. HA! No sheit!! They sold mass amounts of installs to the elderly with some nasty nasty jobs. I always felt so bad for these older people who assumed this stuff was "hurricane proof." I mean, phone rooms?? It was crazy to see them trying something we saw down there 20 years ago.. They sold a job on the west coast of FL.. If my memory is correct, it was approx 400 ft of Johnsons 8 mil clear. they charged $13,500, and got it. That shop wouldn't have been off Oakland Park Blvd, near 95, and be owned by a Canadian named Walter, would it SIR?
hey key, it may have been years ago, but the guys that have it now have had it for the past few years. They are a few young guys, but no not from Canada. I have a few friends that work for them... They also have another shop up on west Sample road. They are 98% all auto. Where you at?? Get back at me when you get a min..

That was back when FP&L was subsidizing the cost of film to the consumer. They made BANK, man! They were 50/50 flat and cars. I'll call you now!!
For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face:
