How to pre-cut half moon windows, FG tip

Here is a very easy technique for pre-cutting half moon windows. First you need to measure the straight edge of the half moon window and divide that by two. Cut your piece of film about 2-3 inches longer than your straight edge measurement. Use your tape measure as a guide and mark the film in a half moon configuration, on the liner side, using the number from step one. Make sure the tape measure stays centered on the film as you are marking it. After your mark is made cut it out with some scissors. I made a quick graphic to better explain the process. Hopefully it is self explanatory but if there are any questions please fire away.



This is not exact so it should be used only to make the piece of film smaller so you can cut it out on the frame easier.

Thanks Dan. I had initially searched to see if it had been posted but nothing came up so i posted it. Hopefully these instructions will be easier to understand than those are.

This idea is good for those who have an adequate cutting surface on site or for those who pre-cut before going out to the site. I think Dan had a good idea before about taping the film to the outer wall and tracing with a black marker the shape you need then cutting the shape out when your on the ground. I use to tape and cut instead of tracing but had to deal with the film falling on larger 1/2 moon windows. Although today I was doing a 1/2 moon window that was about 17ft up at the bottom edge and decided to cut like you mentioned with the tape measure since I didnt want to tape and trace that high up on an a-frame. What I do is just cut on the floor. You put your hardcard under the film... stick your knife into the film on top of the card... and then cut what you need. The card moves freely... and won't harm the floor since the blade is stuck in the card.

Nice, I wouldnt dream of cutting something like that on the glass without pre-cutting. If I did dream about it I would call it a nightmare

All good tips ,
I cut almost all arches and half moons on the glass,especially metal framed ones , anyhow try this if you are pre cutting.
cut however many pieces for the moon, oversize by a couple inches H x W .
Make a T tape tab place the pieces on the tab and carry up with you , Stick in a handy place.
Mist window apply film ,lightly squeege and precut , you can do one at a time if you don't feel comfortable putting them all up,
When you're done you can pull them off individually and lightly mist adjoing pane to temporarily hold piece while you final edge clean and squeege.
On the last piece use the tape tab to hold the film so you dont get excess moisture on adjoining already tinted panes (oh yeah I cut silicone ,foam or whatever and scrape while the film is on the tab )
Try it it will save you some time .

i'm pretty sure the palladian in the pic is one piece, not tdls. unless i totally misunderstood your tip.

On really odd shaped windows I tape, mark, and trim.

On arches (since that's really all I do is arch windows with dark films) I just cut off the dog ears with scissors, throw it up there and precut, install.

Roachster, you always seem to do it the easiest most sensible way! I was reading in general about cutting door patterns and they get

just as complicated! We would probably bang out a ton of work as a team. Just git the dang thing done and move to the next one!

once up and once down per set is plenty good,however you slice your film.

I love the added input! Thanks guys! With this technique you only have to go up the ladder one time. Take the windows Roach did for example, All you would have to do is measure the wndow that is right above the door and you have your straight edge measurement. Mark and cut your film on the floor as specified in my post. After that you can get up on your ladder to prep the window and install. You can even reverse roll it if you like which I have done many times

i just cut the pc..put film on wall with blue tape and cut out the arch. takes about 10 secs.

sounds harder, you have to handle and tape the film without creasing it and then you have to handle the arch piece that is falling as you cut it

some people have skills. if cant handle film without creasing it you are in the wrong bis.
