this isn't good that individual cities are allowed to ban a service, shouldn't state law override the city ordinance?

wow...I wonder what the crime rate is there or if that has anything to do with it.

this big govt crap keeps getting worse everyday. The people should be allowed to vote on this, not a few council members with an obvious agenda.

If I am thinking correctly, local laws connot override what the state has mandated as legal for auto use. Only the state legislature and the DMV have that authority.

Man, didn't we revolt against England and fight two world wars so that we could live free from tyranny?
I think we should cram those tasers up their collective poopchutes and send them to a communist country where they belong.

You revolted against the English but the English/British fought along side you in world war 2 (dont remember the americans on the front line at the Somme etc?). and the Gulf one and two missions and now Afganistan. Sorry had to have my say from this side of the pond.

It wasn't intended to be a slap at the English, but we did revolt from the English to escape the tyranny of government. In America, government is supposed to be restricted by the constitution. My point is that many many people died to protect our freedom from tyrannical government and here we have a clear example of tyranny. Cheers.

Yep no worries TD, wasnt meant as a dig, we have stupid local government here aswell and you get pissed off with stupid people making stupid laws for no real reason but to make money etc. It grinds with me at the moment, i was on desert storm 1 on a Challenger main battle tank, weve lost another 2 paras today in Afganistain these people fighting for freedom and justice around the world , meanwhile some jerks in an office somewhere make up rules for the sake of it, its all bollocks im afraid........

Window-tinting shops under fire New ordinance lets Peoria go after businesses that install !llegal product onto vehicles advertisement By BY ERINN DESHINSKY OF THE JOURNAL STAR Posted Jun 29, 2008 @ 11:31 PM PEORIA —
A change in a Peoria ordinance now allows police to fine not only drivers violating state law by having a tinted windshield or front windows, but also get to the root of the problem - window-tinting shops.
The ordinance the City Council passed Tuesday allows police to fine businesses that installed tinted windows on vehicles found to be in violation of state law, which prohibits windshields from having tint, except for the top six inches. Front driver and passenger side windows also cannot be tinted. Shops found ignoring this law will be fined between $100 and $1,000.
"Traffic stops continue to be one of the most dangerous parts of a police officer's job, and it is very unnerving to a police officer to have to walk alongside of a vehicle and not be able to see what the occupants are doing inside," Police Chief Steven Settingsgaard said recently in an e-mail.
Changing the ordinance to also fine those who do the installation is an issue of fairness, the police chief said.
"This loophole in the current ordinance can put drivers between a rock and a hard place. They can legally drive a car into a shop, legally have tinting applied, yet cannot then legally drive away from the shop," he said. "They do drive off and then are astounded when they are stopped and cited."
Matt Fleming, who has been tinting windows in Peoria for about 10 years, said the new ordinance is anything but fair to small business owners like himself. Fleming, who said he tints about 30 cars a week, said most of his customers are looking for a way to reduce glare. Even the lightest tints - almost invisible to the eye, he said - can reduce up to 99 percent of ultraviolet rays.
"These are not gang-bangers," he said.
Settingsgaard also cited driver's impairment as a problem with tinted windows. The tint can reduce the chances a driver sees pedestrians, approaching vehicles or other obstructions, he said. While Fleming agreed some darker tints could be obstructing, most people prefer the lighter shades.
To Fleming, the new ordinance is about the city making a profit, unfortunately on his dime.
He likened his job to installing powerful speaker systems, which are often used by violators of the city's noise ordinance.
"If people want it, they're going to go get it done," he said. "(The new ordinance) puts me in an awkward position, because if I choose to abide by the law and refuse to do it, they'll go to someone willing to break the law.
"The only one benefitting is the person doing it at home, not paying taxes."
Settingsgaard said he believes most legitimate shops will follow the new ordinance and that he doesn't expect to spend police time on random or routine inspections. He added police will investigate any shops they learn are ignoring it.
"I anticipate that if someone is violating, we will learn it from the driver during the traffic stop," he said.
The new ordinance goes into effect Aug. 1.
With window tinting making up the majority of his business, Fleming is faced with a tough decision.
"Either I deny my customers what they want or I break the law," he said. "Either way I lose."

while a bummer, IL is one of a half dozen states with an outright ban on film on the front doors, and one of a third of the states in the US that effectively ban film on the front doors. If you started a tint shop in one of those states I would have to wonder why. the tint industry really does need a heavy weight lobby behind it....

I'm sure you'll have plenty of business for the rear windows. Just follow the law. At least your not under Indiana's law. 1,000 dollar fine for the driver of an illegally tinted car and if they can prove a particular shop did the tinting its a 10,000 dollar fine for the shop. Indianna tinter's seem to get along just fine.

I probably missed it, but what state is Peoria in ? I can think of 2, Illinois, and Arizona
For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face:
now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
