I think it was Blade that brought this tip to my attention, thanks a lot!!

Got a client that wants me to sell him precut kits of security film, he's got a Hyundai dealer that wants all cars come out with security film. So I told him to bring me the templates and I would digitalize them and sell him the precut kits, in total 7 models. Thanks to this site and to Blade's tip, I'm working on it...

Is that how u digitise images. Photo black on white background and then scan it in?

How is your plotter set up going? Has it been worth it?

For a few years I have thought about getting one or a system but did not think it was worth the expense. Looked at Computer Cut - Tint Tek - but if I did go down the plotter route I would rather build my own database of templates. I am thinking I may take the plunge.

Like I said, this is not my invention but rahter Blade's, or probably Blade was the only one so kind to share it with us on this forum. This is my first time I'm doing it...

I'm taking a pic (tinted film template on white background) with a Digital camera. It's imortant that the camera is not too near, otherwise you won't get too good results. Then I open the pic in Corel Draw (or any other vector based program you feel comfortable with), accomodate the pic so I have a good horizontal bottom edge. Then I just draw a rectagle or someting, fill it with some contrasting color (in my case yellow) and put it at some 50% opaque (so it's semin-transparent). Then I just add nodes, follow the shape and at the end, meassure the real thing and adjust the size, that's it....

PS: I'm not using the trace tool since it just adds tons of unesessary nodes, you won't get a clean shape with it

I bought the plotter last year but installed it just 2 weeks ago, go figure!! I had fear of it, but it's actually quiet easy! I bought it for selling precut security film kits, had no time to persue the project until now. I'm sure for what I bought it and considering the demand that exists right now for this, I will have tons of work for the plotter, especially since Llumar (or better said, their mediocre dealer down here) are selling precut kits like like hell nationwide. I don't regret having bought the plotter since I know that sooner or later (depends on me) I will have to hire somebody just to operate it...

For example, this is the first I digitized in Corel today...

I'm not sure if this is the final position, but more or less this is the idea based on 60" material and a 60" plotter (54" cutting).

And there are people out there who think tinters are just a bunch of HS dropouts who cant even spell their names. You guys are pretty smart yo!

I've been trying it recently with vinyl templates for dot matrix......unsuccessfully so far.

just hope that the tinter who's putting it on knows that you arn't cutting all paterns with factory top edge at least in that photo the one will screw him every time.

Since blade posted this tip I have been taking a photo of door handles with a tape measue on the side.... then I scale out the picture so it's real size (using the tape measure for reference) and then overlay shapes to create door handle cups with ppf. So far every one has fit spot-on...

Using the measure for reference in the picture helps. I used to do that for motorcycle ppf patterns I would make. put a horizontal and vertical reference line with measurements, beside or on top of the pattern. The photo can be taken from a little closer. You just draw the same lines in Corel and then size the photo to match the reference lines.

what is the maximum thickness of security film you are managing to cut on your plotter? we have struggled to cut past 4mm on our Graphtec plotter at full cutting weight.
