Full Version: charging for c card

Has anyone tried charging 2% or so more for credit card transactions? With profit margins getting thinner and the number of transactions my retail does I am thinking about trying it. If you are shopping and the price is a cash price would the cc card charge tick you off? dunno.gif

it's easy to do it without the customer knowing. mark up the prices across the board , and offer a cash discount.
TTS
My cc processing contract specifies that we can not mark up transactions for processing....

I like the mark it up and offer a 2% cash discount idea!

Yup my check guarantee company charges a monthly fee and 2 or 3% of each transaction. Then when a problem comes up they act like they don’t know me. I like the cash discount, film at 11!!!(will tell you how it goes)

i take amaricanexpress also with a rate i think in 3.5% . I think i will stop taking them. Anyone who has an AE will have a debit/credit card

That is what I would do if you really want to charge more for cc. I know other small businesses do the same, they give a 5% cash discount and a 2% debit card discount, while checks and cc's pay full price. I don't think "reasonable" customers would get upset if they knew they paid a higher price using a cc vs. cash if they knew what fees we pay for so they don't have to be inconvenienced by running to an atm machine.

Then again...some customers think cc are cash...so just make the distinction...cash is the green stuff.

Actually, if everyone reads their credit card processing contract, they all have a clause in it the says you cannot up-charge for credit card purchases. I have dealt with many CC companies over the years and they all do this. You can, however, offer a cash discount for all purchases and that does not violate the terms of your agreement. Mark-up your price by 5 % and offer a 3% cash discount.

For two years now I've been charging an additional $2.50 for any credit or debit card transactions. So far no problems, and the cheap customers will bring cash instead of paying an extra couple bucks. I don't know about if it's cool with my processing service, but everytime you go to the store to get soda or beer or whatever they charge an extra $.75 for credit. So why shouldn't we charge too? And most of the time the $2.50 doesn't cover the whole amount I get charged from the processing service. I'll keep doing it until I get told I can't by my processing service.

Credit card charges are just a cost of doing business. Adds credibility and brings in more business. Lot of tinters don't take them, probably couldn't get approved. When your making 2-3 hundred an hour, what's a couple per cent on 10-20% of transactions?

It is the cost of doing business by offering that form of payment to the customer. If you don't like the fees, either stop taking cc's or find a processor with lower rates.
naughtydog
I charge 3% for cc cards and dont take cheques from non account customers.

Or the smarter alternantive, OFFER CASH DISCOUNTS. Raise your price by 5% and offer a 3% cash discount.CC's can amount to as much as 40-50% of payment form. With most at 2.2 - 3.5 %(Amex is at the top), at a rate of sales of $75,000/yr and 40% CC's, that amounts to what could be $700-900/ yr. A decent loss, IMHO. Costs are up, it's time to use your salesmanship and raise prices!!!

I just dont take credit cards. I have not had any complaints about it. I had one guy come in and ask and leave but nobody else. It seems the customers know why and they dont complain they just give me a check or pay cash. grinning_and_saying_no.gif

we take our customers money anyway but with American express - when your pricing just make sure the service fees are covered.

For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face:
now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
