Full Version: competing against a distributor/tint shop
was doing a install today, when we were finished the custy offered my samples back. i told her we usually leave them for the custy to show there friends the film they got. she said it was there only office in miami and handed them to me. while driving to stop # 2 i noticed there was another proposal sticking out of the folder. what do you know. a competing tint shop had done an estamate on the same job. this tint shop just happens to be the south fl geo distributor. must suck having to compete against the people selling you the film if your a geo dealer. dont seem fair.
That garbage is happening more and more. Madico just snagged a job from me. No, not a Madico Dealer it was Madico the MFG.
They'll probably be calling soon to hit me up to do the install...
I've done installs for Madico, V-Kool, and 3M...
wow, no support i guess for us dealers who buy and sell thier stuff
there are only 12 exclusive Geo Dealers in Florida from what i understand, so i dont think they will be competing against each other.
I didn't even know there were any distributors other than the main one.

Distributors doing that crap....thier should be a law against it. That would be like a FORD manufacturing plant selling cars, and saying " DONT GO TO YOUR LOCAL DEALER , WE CAN BEAT THIER PRICE...CAUSE WE MAKE EM "...... Should be a law.
With the exceptions of Baekhart, CP, and Solamatrix, all do this to some degree........whether they admit it or not. Maddy is just flat out proud of it!!!
yea whatelse is new.

Maddy is just flat out proud of it!!! BSF & CP do it too... i did a bid in Palo Alto, i gave them a quote, they said "to much" i was like, who gave you a cheaper price? they said "llumar" and even showed me a written out estimate that they were given on the spot, with they're logo and everything. no signs of an independent dealer. Don't think for a min. that it's not being done. If more business can be grabbed and guaranteed for a manufacturer, do you think they would refuse it?? Of course not. Beak and CP do it, I have quoted against them in the past. If a larger customer searches them out, they will definately quote a job. But to admit it in the open, they probably would not do, since it would be figured to be suicide with their customers. In todays economy, you will see more and more of it. The hardest thing is to get them to quote reasonable prices, so that WHEN they call us to install it, we can get a fair rate.
It doesn't seem right, but unfortunatly its about the almighty dollar! Question is : Would you as a skilled tinter , tint if you were selling film and had the set up to do so? Hmmmm ethics or money.
Since I was asked to post our position on this topic, I will say that Solamatrix will not bid jobs directly. As with all window film manufactures, we get opportunities to bid jobs since all of us are easily accessible via internet. I will forward these bids first to dealers that are buying from us or if in the case we don’t have a dealer in that area, the lead goes to a dealer prospect. Our sales team is also informed of the bid opportunity and will follow up with the dealer that the lead goes too.
Bidding jobs directly is not the direction Solamatrix takes to grow its business. We are in the business of making top quality window films, not bidding buildings. However, our sales team is more than qualified to assist in bidding large applications if called upon. I feel this type of action is a conflict of interest to the loyal dealers that are buying our films. Bill Stewart North American Sales and Operations Manager
3m has been doing that for year's in tally .one of my good freind's is the local 3m guy .only thing is he loves it because of 3m high price they charge a arm and a leg ,so he make a killin

I don't use Llumar for flat glass but I had a friend that was on the sales team over at the distributor, which is now gone and is now a manufacturer direct, and they talked openly about bidding and doing jobs. That was a few years ago too so this is something they have always done.

If they are still competing against their customers why should I or anyone else do business with them? Can any CP Rep tell us if there has been a policy change? Please post and let us know.
What about some of you other company reps that cruise through here....? We know who most of you are so why not take the opportunity to do some PR.
Burns, what is Geoshield doing? Do your reps bid commercial jobs that your dealers are bidding on? Five O, you are BSF what does your company do? Aegiespres, dare I ask... You guys bidding on commercial projects? valueTint.com what's your polciy? Anyone from 3M want to enlighten us? Madico? Anyone have anything to say? Johnson? Come on Scott let us know what JWF's policy is? Huper? What up? V-Kool has anything changed? OTI, ya'll bidding commercial against your customers? Global, what's your policy? SunTek... you've had representation here, why not tell us what your policy is? (vclimber @ Oct 30 2008, 06:37 PM) [*]650722[/*] What about some of you other company reps that cruise through here....? if they have nothing to hide then they shouldnt have a problem answering.
(tintgod @ Oct 30 2008, 03:42 PM) [*]650725[/*] yeah...good luck with this.. I'm going to take a "no answer" as guilty and "we don't give a cr@p what you guys think..." If they are like Capt Bill then I think they'd rush in to let us know that they are partnering with their customers and not competing against them. That's good PR.
IN BEFORE DA LOCK
(TINT @ Oct 30 2008, 03:47 PM) [*]650729[/*] IN BEFORE DA LOCK There is no need to lock this. I'm sure they don't mind when we push their products on here, it's time to get a little something back our way...
Then a new thread should be started that way your post doesnt get lost with the rest of the replies.
OTI strives to excel in the customer service department. We try to get to know our customers as best as we can and treat them the best we can. Our goal is to set up long term customers and build a good reputation for good service within this industry. Bidding or installing architectural jobs will not help us achieve these goals, therefore we feel its a conflict of interest and choose not to do it. If anyone here would like to take a look at our flat or auto films, please feel free to give me a call. I would be more then happy to send out some free samples and an info packet.

Hello Guys and Gals,
Hello Guys and Gals,
Sorry about that last post. My name is Jason and I am a sales rep here at JWF. I have been here for about 15years and have been through almost every department. The stand that we here at JWF take on this is that we supply the film for those jobs and do not install them. If we get the call for an estimate we will find a local upstanding dealer and refer the work to them. Sometimes we may just give the end user a few names and numbers and let them sort it out for themselves. Hope this puts your minds at ease. Hope to see all of you out at SEMA.

Jason thanks for your prompt reply, nice to see JWF's policy. So when you say that you supply the film does that mean that your are selling it direct to the customer and having your dealer do the install?
Vclimber, No we do not sell the film to the end user. We sell the film to our dealers and they do the job. That is the way it is suppose to be.

I've never experienced or heard JWF involved in the regarding subject we are after.
Well folks so far we have 3 companies that will not compete against you in the flat glass market. Anyone else out there?
huper..anyone..??
(tintgod @ Oct 30 2008, 04:12 PM) [*]650756[/*] huper..anyone..?? we are hoping at least someone from each manufacturer who works for them to come on here and admit they're not bidding, and installing film against they're dealers.
I want to drop in and show I'm not ignoring this thread, I was upfront that I got hired into BSF and am very proud of it. That being said, as an employee with less than 2 months experience with the company I am not in a position, nor do I have the permission to be making statements on behalf of BSF on here.
I hope you guys can appreciate that, I'm the green horn and very passionate about this industry but I cannot hop on here and make posts in a thread representing BSF for this subject and I shouldnt.
nm...........
Do all you nieve f***cks actually believe this crap? I dont care if they sign it in blood, the manu. is not going to hand over a primo job to "you".

But we still need someone from you company and claim they are not bidding and installing against they're dealers, i know its hard to control what manu's do and we respect that. But we need a strong voice from each company contribute with they're point of view like the rest have already started to do so. Congrats on the job by the way
