Full Version: the r and r day from hell
yesterday was the day from hell. it all started with a old acura coupe. it came in from florida with dried out old purple tint i sweated the rear for 30 to 40 mins then started hitting it with the steamer . we started to peal it and it was delaminating the clear was coming off in little pieces and the color was coming in even smaller pieces so after 15 mins of nothing i told the custy he was going to have to loose the defrost lines and we will blade it or he can get a new glass he thought about it and said no he wants the lines and his old glass and he will pay 200 more than the quote so i booked it me and my buddy started on the car 10 30 am we finished the car at 4 30 pm the worst i had ever done every single piece of that tint came off the size of your finger nail omg $500 rr at the end my shoulders are burnt out today i feel like i got my azzz kicked
damn i can kind of feel your pain there , ive gotta do an R&R on an accord wagon this week when i get the film , reading your bad luck now makes me feel like not doing the job haha.
class , FYI on that baked on purple FL
got love that money ,it's better than a real job
I hate it when I have an RR on baked bg's. Damn near impossible to remove the film. I did a 99 accord yesterday RR and the bg was in 4 pieces with SolarGard. I ran out of sun so had to do it with a torch. (i dont have a steamer) It took over an hour just SLOWLY removing the film. On top of that, they tried pulling the film from the doors but only pulled the first layer, which made it even more difficult. Started at 4:30 and didn't finish til 7:15.
Do 2 or 3 weekly min. around here its common to do r&r's the way i see it it's more green for me.
The Texas sun ain't nice to film either so we see our share of the purple baked on wholesome goodness. Had a Toyota Celica one time that the customer started peeling himself. Not sure what he did but the film was marred to the glass. He didn't want to loose his defroster so we charged him accordingly and took hour shifts peeling. Nothing we tried seemed to work so we had to just use a steamer and pull tiny piece by tiny piece. It took a good six hours to get it off. The worst one I have ever done and I charged him four hours labor but I wish I would have charged more.
i've been tinting 30 yrs., make sure you tell cust going in- that the defrost may be lost if film won't come off w/o scraping...sweating is great in summer- but does not always work
I hate the stink of old film with a removal like that.......

I feel your pain Joe...We've been doing a R&R almost on a daily basis for the early tax returns! Though it sucks , it's income coming in. That's better than nothing at all!! At least my steamer is payed for now!
I feel your pain. A couple years ago over a span of 2 days 7 of the 11 jobs i did were strip and re-tints in one form or another. I was wanting to kicks somebodys azz.
I told the peckerhead that was scheduling jobs that he needed to get back and help take the damn tint off so he could see why i was "crying" about it. I use a steamer and get 9 out of 10 easy but that 1 that it deosnt work turns your hair grey. I have started to do the rear 1st and if it doesnt come off i call the customer and say i have to scrape or take it some where else , Its not worth it to spend so much time keep respraying and bagging it .
I did a 02 bmw 740 today, it wasn't too bad. It was crazy faded but came off in one piece with the steamer.
I did do a 96' civic last year that came off in tiny pieces. I told him to buy a new glass or I caould scrape it off, so now he has no defroster. I've noticed that dyed film seems to come apart, but the hybrid films stay together from my experience so far.
2001 Civic, customer wants the back glass r & r. Oh and please match the purple tint!
Honda dealer calls Saturday. A 2000 Civic r & r. No problem, until I get there. Purple peeling junk. It was delaminating and coming off in tiny pieces after bagging it. Steamer didn't help either. I gave them a choice...no defroster or new glass. It was a Honda certified used car, so they bought a new glass! They had to get a new windshield too...there were bullet holes in it. It had belonged to the district attorney!!

For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face:
