My father in-law used to Weigh his rolls. It was pretty accurate.

The only way I have been able to track tint, is to use a per foot unit. Each sale must have an average unit use (ie: 15 feet per car) if you use a higher number, you can account for waste, depending on how wasteful your shop is. Not totally accurate, but close.

there is always the old fashiond method of writing 100 on the box and then subtracting from that everytime you pull tint off that roll

I use the box method too. It reconciles itself every 100 feet when you start a new one.

We are going to try again this year. Previous efforts have failed. We use QuickBooks Pro which has a Purchase Order form. We will be entering film description + width and the square footage of that roll. Also the roll # for warranty and the cost per square foot including freight. This will add film to inventory when the check is written. When we make a sales receipt or invoice the quantity in square feet will be deducted from inventory and the pre set retail markup will be priced on the receipt. We will be using a seperate labor hour charge just like any other mechanic. We hope for the best.... at least it will allow time adjustment and tint adjustments all seperately.

I COULD USUALLY TELL WHEN I'M GETTING LOW ON FILM. WHEN I HAVE ENOUGH ON MY 40 INCH ROLL TO DO ABOUT 6 REAR WINDOWS I KNOW I SHOULD ORDER MORE. I CAN USUALLY TELL JUST BY LOOKING AT MY ROLL HOW MUCH IS LEFT.

I track film by the footage on each vehicle, and log roll ID #s when I open a new roll. It tracks waste, and I can warranty my film years from now from the log dates, and ID #. If you budget 20% of all tint sales to film and tools, when the film use is less than budget, pay the overage to the tinter, they in turn will waste less, and steal none.
If the film use is over the 20% fire 'em

It's very difficult to track film usage by computer because, especially for flat glass, you buy by the linear foot and sell by the square foot. If you convert to square feet when you put it in inventory and deduct the square footage you sell, you'll be close, but I don't think there's any way to account for the waste. It can be approximate, but never exact.
You can track car film usage a little easier. If you figure how many average size cars you get out of a roll, you'll be close. However, definitely not an exact science.

I gave up on tracking film by using the pc, i track all sales with roll #'s on the pc, but film on the shelf i manage by the two box system. When a box, (roll), is exhausted and i open a new box, i simply order a new roll of film. I usually receive the new roll within two days ground. I order all 40" material for automotive, so I shouldn't run out of material in two days.I dont plan on working that hard.
For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face:
now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
