Full Version: What % tint to get

Hey, ok so i have a 4 door ford focus and i would say its an emerald color or jade (some type of green), i live in NY tint law is lowest for any window 30% and rear any.
So im debating on weather to go :

-35% all around and 20% rear (or would the rear make it look bad?)
-just get 35% all around including rear.
-also if the shop i go to will have it, do 30% on back 3 windows and 35% front and windshield.

If anyone has and experience with this and would share it would be greatly appreciated. Any advise is helpful to me. Thanks in advance!

I'd do 35% all around, that would look nice. Dont tint your windshield...you'll get a ticket.

i thought i could get 6 inches from the top down to tint windshield? and thanks for reply

most clear glass on almost any car is already by default 83-71% already, adding a 35% would actually metered to like 20!, a 50% or 45% all around would be better consider the laws in your state.

I have never seen factory glass that was that tinted. Usually its 4-8% already, and a 35% film will meter about 32%, not 20. Theres no way that would happen.

Also is there different types of 35% tint that may look darker from outside then other 35% tint?

yes, but that is because not every film meters exactly 35%. for instance usually the cheaper dyed films meter pretty much dead on, but the hybrids, HPs, and full metal films can range by as much as 4%. just have the shop you go to take a little piece(like 6x9) of a scrap, and put 2 or 3 on a window next to eachother so you can get an idea of what the films look like. most shops will do that no problem, because its usually scraps, or a small enough piece that it wont matter.

thanks a lot

Dude,
Either you're having an off day, or you got some jacked up laws and have not used 35%, but it DOES NOT meter at 20% after the install. 32 or 33 but no less.

you've got your numbers wrong rookie. if factory glass was 4-8% then it would be "limo". factory glass is just as TINT said......the majority of glass i meter is around 76%. you might wanna get a meter dude. figuring the way you are......a 35% film would actually have 65% light transmission. the number ( 35, 20, 5 ) represents the light transmission.

no matter how the math might figure percentages.....my experience is that the tint usually drops about 4% from whatever the film actually is once it's installed.

maybe that's where you're getting your 4-8%. but that's not the VLT of the factory glass.

I never said 4-8% LIGHT TRANSMISSION. I said 4-8% TINT, meaning it has a very light tint applied to it. Thats the way my distributor always talks about it, so its the way I learned. And yes, I do have a meter, and use it all the time.

If it was me I'd do 35% on the sides and 20% on the rear windshield. That way the sides match but the rear windshield which looks lighter from letting in light from the untinted windshield is darker. Actually to be honest I'd go 5% on the rear windshield if it was me and it was legal but it doesn't sound like you want that. Then whatever % I picked for the sides I'd keep it the same front and rear.

For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face:
now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
