bleaching privacy glass

Hi Guys,

My son has a Mitsubishi Evo MR 8, imported from Japan, with very dark windows - he says it is stained or baked on, but not film.
He has just been given a defect notice due to the windows being too dark - even though it has been registered a few years, and this has not been brought up at rego time.
Anyway, he has to get the 2 side/back windows and the rear window fixed within a week. The quote for 3 new windows from O'Briens is about $1400, but they can do it this week.

This might be a dumb question, but I was wondering if there is any way the glass can be bleached or lightened?

Thanks
Lou

Where are you located? That will help with any legal thoughts.

As for the windows....I would say that they are going to be a film! You should check with a window tint shop and see what they say for certain. If the glass is indeed tinted glass then there should not be any way to make it lighter. With that thought though if it is indeed dyed glass then I know that the law in Illinois would not cover it as they state "tinted or colored film" being applied and nothing about dyed glass.....

Never saw or been able to find deep tinted windows for cars....

Where in Sydney are you? Who defected him police or RTA? If it was imported that way it would have had to get a Blue slip/ engineers certificate. Our tint laws only apply to aftermarket applications, film, not privacy glass. Take it to a tinter they will tell you if it's film or not.

He described it a bit like this...

He went past a police RBT thing on Sunday evening, and went into the service station nearby to buy a fizzy drink.
When he came out there was a policeman looking at his car.
They had an RTA portable compliance/checking station with them at the RBT - couple of vans with RTA equipment. They had a light meter or something that could check the amount of light going through.

I will pass on your comments to him.
I know he rang the RTA yesterday, and they werent at all helpful.

I am hoping he can at least get an extension to the time frame for the compliance, as one week is very short time to organise all this, if he has to get new windows.

tks
Lou

Bad luck..... what else did they pin him for?

You can get the NSW regulation on line through the RTA or go to WFAANZ and look up regulations each state is listed there.

If you need anymore information let me know where you are.

I am pretty sure that that model of Lancer does come with factory privacy glass so that would exempt him from having to comply with the defect notice, we're talking about the rear 3 glasses only right?
If it is factory standard he will still have to go through the RTA to have the defect lifted but it should be a painless process. beer.gif

I had a look at RAWS website, and called a company listed there which does compliance, and he says the same as you, so looks like he might be exempt.

Glad I could help.

I know there was a recent police blitz for tint in Bondi, Leichhart and Blacktown do any of these cover you or have the targeted another area also?

FYI, O'Breins are one of the most expensive glass replacement co's you could deal with.

Hi Tint Wife,

I have spoken to the compliance engineer who approved the car in the first place, and also spoken to the Technical support people at RTA and his Windows are exempt, and shouldnt have been defected!

All he needs to do is get a pink slip. He is very happy about this as you can imagine.

He was at the service station in Woolloomooloo.

Thanks for your help, it is much appreciated

It's very strange that the Evo would have 'dipped' factory tinted glass, no matter what country it's from. I too, own a Evo VIII MR and the only tint that's on it is the film I installed. Good luck and tell your son to speed safely!

For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face:
now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
