Full Version: using steam to apply PPF
was curious how many of you use steam to install ppf ?
I do sometimes. It really helps on some installs. It also helps to get the edges to lay down and seal really nice.
I do......
me too ! makes a nice handling of the film.
Just finished some ppf training..went well ! Using Clear Shield and steam went pretty good..good enough to bring a 1010 Mazda sport back to the dealer with a freebee of my training end result
Just need more cars to work on now ..someday I'll charge for it when I feel the work is consistant enough to put my name behind it
I do and think it helps out big time no matter what film you use. It is a must for clearshield IMO. I give props to the guys that don't rely on them much. I always have my steamer going it seems like.

Wouldn,t know how to apply it without steam
Never used a steamer when I first started doing them. Now I do, but only if the is big fingers or an edge I am having trouble. Works great and speeds up getting fings out.
Damn it....now I have to go get one.
Never used steam ! Heard about it but have never felt the need been installing 4 years. What exactly do u use it for? I use bulk film and if a finger comes up i just wash it out with alcohol dont really have an edge problem my edges are wraped. y

Is that what bulk film instals are about ? . Do you have to cut all edges . Do you do bulk beacuse you dont have the plotter or do you prefer cutting it your self ?
Well one i dont have a plotter, havent had any luck with putting on kits. Kits just dont look good to me and dont think they cover enough. I prefer bulk film because its more custom of a job I take out emblems and grills and it just gives you a cleaner looking install.
Played with them found that you dont really need em TBH. They have their uses I guess but we work fine without them.
Cheers
the past few kits i've done really opened my eyes, now I understand what the steamer hype is all about ! I don't think i'll be paint filming without one
I use steamers to clean the all edges of the bumper. A ton of garbage gets in there that can fall under the film when you spray water on it. I've seen dirt streaming out from Mini emblems when blasted.
As far as using it on film, Xpel and Avery at least don't need it. They stretch so well as is. 3M I wouldn't even think of touching without one. I can see why peeps would want to use it on 3M but TBH once you get a feel for 3M (scotchgard) you can ditch on that, its biggest benefit I reckon is for fixing lift issues if you get any, it does a great job of getting dirt off the adhesive and 90% of the time you can lay it back down real well (especially with edge prep or pro bond) job done Its other use is to get dirt out from around the headlamp apertures and other placs where crud can run out behind the film on install (will I need to post pics on that now ) Cheers Tom
