DRY SHRINKING

i was curios but i have been doing this a long time and wonders who else does it? when i pull a car in the shop on a cold day and realize that i will be dry shrinking a bg with alot of curve. ill wet the glass and wipe a dryer sheet over the wetness. once ive spead the water to cover the bg ill turn the rear defrost on and this helps dry it out quicker. by the time the computer cuts the film and weed it to the point im ready to shrink it the softner is dry. i can make my water line threw the center of both the back glass and the film, place the film on the bg and begin shrinking. of course turning the defroster off before this step...


so my question is "how many speed up the process by using the defroster?"

and how many other ways do we all use dryer sheets???

Dryer sheets are very toxic, cancer causing i believe. I've tried dryer sheets, and the soap method but i like powder the best

i haven't used dryer sheets in 6 years or so...i only use soap..and i just hit it with my heat gun if i need it to dry faster...my heat gun with dry it faster the the defrost will.

never done this and or heard of this technique....i couldnt really understand it either

how can it be so toxic if we use it on all our clothes . It would be more toxic with the clothes becuase its on our skin all day long. Is this a govt conspiracy?

I used dryer sheets a while back now I mostly use soap unless its a funky curve I use powder

i use both depending on the app. but the thing i dislike about powder is th e residue left behind, realy stands out on a black car. the main car i like using sheets on is the new o9 accord. it has reduced the install time by 10mis. wich i like that a aspect of it. powder ill use on like eclipse 3rd gen maybe a beatle "extremely curved glass" but like tint god use soapy water majority of the time for new mustamgs and slight curve.


never thought about it like this:

curve.................... technique
1.slight >>>>>>>> soapy water
2.mild >>>>>>>>> sheets
3.extreme >>>>>>> powder

word, I keep a chamois on hand to wipe the cars down with I even use it to shrink with when I do my final wet check smooth it out with the chamois then hard card it

Heat gun knocks it out in no time.

spray. wipe. lay.... that easy.

Fabric softners have many toxic chemical...MANY. anyway
1. you vent your home dryer outside.
2. your home dryer only gets to about 350 deg F.
3. your heat gun can easily get over 1000 deg F.
4. you stand directly over/around a bg while shrinking. ( do you usually stick your head in your dryer while your clothes dry???)
5. different chemical reactions take place at different temperatures and in different quantites ( higher heat = more of a catalysts)

I'm sure there is more, I'm merely stating what common sense would tell us.

its really very simple. mist the BG, wipe a dryer sheet over it, and wait for it to dry. works just like a soap shrink, only I like soap better. Its all I use on any car(except L&Ping on vettes/beetles) then I use wet

In other words, remove all the added fragrance that endears people to fabric softeners and -- like the cliché wolf in sheep's clothing -- the real smells of the chemical-laced fabric softener and the synthetic fabrics they were designed around may prompt people to shoot their laundry machines and be done with it.

i use a dryer sheet in the fiter to my vacum at the house to odorize as i vacum. it fits perfect in its air filter...works great!

The dryer sheet method started on this site as a better alternative to using fabric sizer, which also originated here.

The dryer sheets work great, but they made a lot of people, including me, very sick from chronic, daily exposure. Then Mdog invented the soap shrink technique with a non-toxic alternative to dryer sheets that works just as well, so there's no need to say that people who mention the toxicity of dryer sheets are 'conspiracy theorists', we have experience getting very sick from them, and since a better alternative has been found, why not try the soap shrink instead?

I'd recommend Ivory soap, works great and one bar will last forever.

Plus it dries A LOT faster than dryer sheets.

I've just always heard everyone up here complain about them being toxic. I never had issues using a dryer sheet but still prefer powder

i agree...i like the way the tint reacts with powder...i get the best reaction from the tint using powder

Plus ivory is like 3 bars for $1.50. One usually lasts about 6 months depending on how many cars you do.

I never hear about anyone using SS 180 heat shaping wax. I have used dryer sheets and powder and soap and nothing gives the heat tolerance or the movement that the wax provides. You spray it on and rub it in to get good coverage. Then when finished shaping I just wipe it off with a buffer cover cloth, it comes right off, and it leaves the back glass extremely clean. More so than even a spray cleaner and paper towels.

the cans are like three bucks and they last a few weeks depending on how much percentage of sales is tint.

I stopped using dryer sheets about 3 years ago as well. Do you hold it with your bare hand when putting it on or use a glove or anything? I figured that handling it every day and the residue getting on the skin would end up being bad one day. So I went to the soap method and it works just as well. I gotta check out the wax method though, sounds cool

i buy the non toxic fragrance free hyper allergenic ....wet the glass and spread....not scared here..heat guns are more dangerous and wil cause cancer also

it says it in the manual and believe its from the brushes(contacts) something about the materail its made from but will say may cause cancer,,,some sort of california requirment with them having to label it...

everything causes cancer in california. but really, whos going to take apart your heat gun and eat the magnets off the motor?

realy you gotta be smarter than that? the dust that exits the gun during use is what was meant. the brushes are constantly moving causes of a electic motor. they are touching copper to brush and this creates dust in the air from the brushes, so yes it does with out taking he gun apart and eating the brushes....to funny

I like the dryer sheet method, although I've never tried the soap. I do wear a disposable plastic glove when wiping the dryer sheet over the moist glass though. And yes, here in CA there are warning labels FOR warning labels! For most anything that can get released in the air, it's all because of CARB...California Air Resources Board.

biodegrardable cationic softners and perfume. That is it!

i was all ways told and done this is the spray the window wipe it clean then light spray the fold your dryer sheet in half and the put a half folded paper towl on the back of dryer sheet so you don't get the stuff on your skine it bad for you. then wipe it across the back window until all the warter is going then take a paper towl and spray the heck out of it and the do a h pattern straight across the middle of the window and then down both sides of the window from top to bottom to lock in the sides you dont have to lock the sides but i find in some situation it works better

but i got away from the dryer sheet and just use babby powder it works better
no harsh chemicals to hurt your skin


the whole point of the dryer sheet is to get the chemical on the window so you have the film lay flat and not stick to the window while shrinking

baby powder does the same

with soap you don't even need to take the time to wet the H or anything. Just lay the film up and go. I find with powder the film doesn't take as much heat as it does with soap

so the dryer sheets just make the window dryer before you shrink it?

If the other shop uses dryer sheets and you don't chances are you'll outlive your competitor right!! Cool, but I might die from white lung disease from inhaling too much baby powder!!
