Full Version: Beginner - ATV seats

I have been asked to re-cover three ATV seats. They have quite a curve to them and I'm a little unsure of how to stretch the vinyl for a perfect fit.

Do I start on an end and stretch my way along or do I start in the "valley" and work my way up and down? Any tips appreciated.

Without a picture, I can't really be sure, I do every one a little different...

It will depend on the material too....

A steamer always helps.... beer.gif

Sight unseen, I would start in the valley and work out of it...

I got all-way stretch vinyl rated to -40 degrees.

This is the exact ATV:

Allsport material, you mean? With that stuff, it will be an easy cover no matter where you start. If the seat is tall enough at the back end that you need to sew a seam around it, then I start at the back where the seam is. Line that up, and pull from there. If it's just a stretch seat, with no seam, then I usually start in the crook of the seat and pull out in all directions.

I don't use a steamer on seat covers. It doesn't make the vinyl as soft and pliable as I like. I use an actual heat gun to soften the material. Until you get the hang of how long you can heat material, it's best to practice on srap material. Go ahead and b urn up a couple pieices so you know what to expect.

I don't see the need for a heatgun in most cases... Just too hot and takes a lot of finesse to get right...
Like you say, it takes some practice to do without burning stuff...

The steamer will soften it up enough to get the job done with out risking any chance of overheating or burning the material, especially on an ATV seat like that one...
With the material he's talking about, all he should need to do is, leave it in the sun for a while and go to pullin on that sh!t.... beer.gif

Yeah, with Allsport, it's nothing to get it to stretch. I thought it had been discontinued. Where did you get it???

I do stretch seats like that because they are quick money. I'm 1/2 mile from the area Dirt Riders track. I get quite a few a year, but I spend more than a half hour or so on the whole thing, I'm not making money. I use the heat gun to get done quick. It's not something I'd recommend to someone just starting out. But ya gotta learn sometime.

A local supplier stocks it, and it's cheap enough for me to mess around a bit and practice a few times.

For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face:
now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
