Full Version: Pulling 12 mil from box
From what I understand, it is much more time efficient to cut film on site. If this is true... how on earth does one cut 12 mil from the box????

you don't pull it from the box you buy a film cutter that the film roll goes on and set the cutter blads to the measurement
of your window set film cuter on top a 6ft ladders bolt it down on top step and it work beautifully QUOTE (FREDSTINTING @ Jun 15 2009, 07:08 PM) [*]695311[/*] you don't pull it from the box you buy a film cutter that the film roll goes on and set the cutter blads to the measurement of your window set film cuter on top a 6ft laders bolt it down on top step and it work beautifully bring super glue and duck tape, incase you cut yourself with that 12mil. goog luck.
Ive done 8mil out of the box many times...but 12mil? Couldnt imagine installing/cutting w/o a filmhandler. If you were to try to pull and cut from the box, the blade will wander every foot.
screw on cutters i pull 12 mill right out the box 2 small pieces of abs one on each side of the box works fine

I did it once. Pulling 15 sqare meters is acceptible but more than that I couldnt handle.
What are you guys talking about it cant be done? You guys must not have much experience with security film. I have cut 15mil out of the box and have done 100's of thousands of sq ft of 8mil outta the box. Also, you dont need a film handler to split film. A 4 inch scraper blade in the box with an aluminum channel works just fine as long as the blade is put in the box strait.

I too have pulled right up to 14 mil straight from the box (plus liner = 15 mil). Simply take your time, pull steadily, and have your partner make the cut at the box end. Good luck! Almo
More power to ya " cutting out of a box" , I'll stick with my film handler, make perfect cuts , cleaner installs and look professional at the same time.
And }-----------> hang more film .
Yep, Filmhandler all the way.
just because u use the film handler doesnt mean you have cleaner installs and it also doesnt mean that you will install more sq. I have a film handler and use it to cut the film the day before the job. If I am cutting on site i just cut outta the box. It is faster cutting outta the box and I dont know how the film handler is more professional. And if you are not doing an attachment system then you will probably only get 1 maybe 2 sides especially if its tinted security film, cause frames are rarely perfectly strait.
My guys do everything without filmhandler
I use a film handler for all except for 14mil as it has a 6” core and would cut that on a table to size at the shop. And if you ever use it the rolls are only 75ft and do not plan on using the last 44” or so as it will have embossed marks from core and will not look optically expectable to the customer.

i always cut from a box never had a problem with it i done up 12ml film didn't have any problem just have to pay attention to what your doing . its called work. sure it's easyer to use a film cutter to do any film job but not necessary to use one .
It is really important to get that blade in strait. I stopped using 4" blades, and started using my super sharp hunting knife to cut 12mil. Works great , the nice thick blade doesn't move.
For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face:
