Rear View Mirror Tint percentage and other questions?

1) I would like to know what the tint is on the rear view mirror.
I don't know if it's just shaded glass or has tint film on it, but I need to know what percentage it is. The reason why I am asking is because I own an SUV, the back window is 20% from the factory (I've been told all SUVs had 20% "privacy" glass on back. I put 5% on the back window and it's great during the day but at night I can't see anything.
I asked the SUV forum I belong to and a guy there said that he put 20% over the back window (which also had the 20% factory shaded glass) and he told me he can see just fine when looking back at night and furthermore he said he does not need to use the dimmer on this rear view mirror.
2) My second question is, what percentage should I put over the back window? 20%, 35%, or 50%? I was thinking of going with 50% but he told me that would be a waste. However, here is the breakdown
20% x 50% = 10% 20% x 35% = 7% 20% x 20% = 4% 20% x 5% = 1%
So from doing the math he claims that by putting 20% on the back window he could see fine, but this brought the amount of light in by 3% which is really nothing.
3) What percentage tint, if put over the factory 20%, will still allow me to see perfectly at night? Right now with the 5% it's pitch black at night.

what might work for some won't work for others. everyone has different eyesight. i see fine with 5% over factory on my truck and van. my wife can't see shiat out of either of 'em though. it's all relative.

Privacy glass is not strictly 20%, varies roughly anywhere between about 22 - 14%.
On my own car it is 17% and I have 70% over that which gives me about 11% light transmittance.
The level of visibility depends greatly on the amount of external lighting, you'll cope better with a lower VLT in a built up area with street lights than rurally where street lighting is limited if there is any at all.

I decided to go for a night cruise tonight just to see how bad it really is. I was surprised how not bad the tint actually was. When driving on a normal two lane city street it's not bad at all. I purposefully rode slow so cars would get behind me so I could see how well the tint worked in blocking their headlights and how easily I could see other cars when signaling to change lanes. Having 5% tint in the back window is just like looking into your rear view mirror with the dimmer on at night, that's the best way to describe it. On the streets I drove on today it caused no problem whatsoever. I have a 4runner and I have the back window 5%, rear quarters 20% and rear passenger windows 35%. I parked my truck and looked back through each of the windows in a somewhat unlit area. There is actually a huge difference in how much light these films put it and you can really see it at night. Without any light source, the back window looks almost pitch black, the rear quarter windows look good with the 20% and the 35% windows look like there is hardly any tint at all. The guy who tinted my vehicle wants to charge me $100 to redone the back window. Based on today's drive I think I'll keep the 5%, but if I was to change it I would go with the 20%.

For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face:
now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
