Full Version: Need film with no scratch resistant coating
Hi,,,, I currently have a commercial job with some windows on an interior application. This is deep inside the building. I installed a 15% auto tint on the windows, they never see the sun and the customer wanted the black look. The customer does not like the rainbow look that the scratch resistant coating causes under flourescent lights. It is sobad it looks like looking thru a rainbow. Changing the bulbs is not and option. All the manufactures tell me it is the scratch resistant coating that causes this. I know years ago you could buy non scratch resistant film. So do any of you know where i could find some non scratch resistant film in a 15% non-reflective. The size I need is 48 inch by 16 feet. Thanks John
the only films i know that come with no scratch resistent coat is black out. never heard of 15% NON REFLECTIVE with no scratch resistence, and doubth anyone would make a special order for just 16 feet

The interference comes from the CFL bouncing off the various multi-stacked layers in the films. If it was the SR coat then why doesn't it happen on reflective 20% films like Llumar R-20?
i know how the scratch coat can be removed from the already installed film.... just put tint on top of it and let it dry...then go back and pull the second layer off and it will pull the scratch coat off of the fist layer of film. that is why when pulling off a second layer off film always comes off with not glue left behind, because the glue is still on the second layer but has the first layers hard coat stuck to it.
VC is correct - it's not the hardcoat.
Iridescence is an optical phenomenon in which hue changes with the angle from which a surface is viewed. It's actually caused by multiple reflections from multilayered, semi-transparent surfaces in which phase shift and interference of the reflections modulates the incident light (by amplifying or attenuating some frequencies more than others). Under certain conditions, window film will exhibit iridescence. This phenomenon usually occurs at night, when the source of illumination within a building is fluorescent lighting. The amount of iridescence may vary from almost imperceptible to very visible, and most frequently occurs when the film is constructed using one or more layers of sputtered metal, though it can occur in non-reflective films as well. When iridescence does occur in window film, the only way to stop it is to prevent the fluorescent light from illuminating the film. -Howard Express Films
