What is your best technique for framless/round edged glass??

I have been filing many pieces of framless glass with a round or curved edge. They are coming out perfect, but what techniques do you all use for this? Think of it as filing a round coffee table. How would YOU cut your edges??

Chainsaw. How did YOU do it?

Fileing works great but I dont like waiting for the film to dry. If the glass isnt too grainy or rough i just line up as much of it as i can to get the edges as tight as posible and over lap the rest. then I just use a sharp olfa to shave the rest. shaved look every time, I like too do this on rollups to if the pattern doesnt come out just right. learned this from a real old timer

sorry Im an Idiot, didnt realize Im in res/com. but for butted glass and whatnot I try to get at least one factory side per pane and then use the same shaveing tecnique with an olfa. I dont see why you need one of those hobbie knives. Its all in the angle. up and away from the surface of the glass. so when you are sliding your knife the handle is ahead of the blade and the blade is in at a 45 degree angle. this will keep it from cutting in to the film

VIP tint + glass
i do it like i do auto, precut that edge. then peel, stick, line that up, squeegee, and cut the rest. i think filing is only needed if youre using 5%. regular vlts will be fine

Over the years I'v learned how to use my Olfa.....and cut film at different angles. I also like to file.

My favorite thing is toe-nail clippers...you know the big clippers....for your toes..... blink.gif .......but you gotta be good to use em....... Flaugh.gif

If the edge is rounded I've found an emery board to work really well for filing
mikeMN
He is talking about ACRYLIC not glass. Flaugh.gif

Good call mike, I bet it would work on acrylic though...

Not if it is a polished edge and also it will depend on the angle of degree of this rounded edge.that’s why I would like to see a pic of this as I have done many in glass and in acrylic with many types of film and vinly.
TTS
Yeah.... depending on the rounded edge.... I have had good luck with using a 'fine' bastard file.. Had to special order them straight from nicolson. but they remove a verry little bit of material at a time so you can file through the film without really getting into the acrylic twocents.gif

These are some of the photos of the installation I was refering to. Frameless acrylic mounted into a counter end. Applied was Solyx White stripe 1214 (1/2" white / 1/4" clear) All free hand cut. SO, how WOULD you have done it???

mikeMN
Is that all the pics you got I need to see a few more and get sum close ups and a swim suit model would be nice as well. It is getting late I will give you a full comment regarding how I would approach that situation weds evning.

for the right price of course. no biggie icon_mrgreen.gif

i dont understand why you need a hacksaw for that spit.gif
sunlimitedCT
Would've freehanded it about 1/16 from the edge. Doesn't seem like a big deal..
darrin1
cool project. for me the bigger the bevel the harder it is for me to see the edge and freehand. did a house last year with huge panels of frameless beveled glass and i just set the olfa 1 or 2 clicks out and ran it down.

For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face:
now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
