Pella Windows

Full Version: Pella Windows
Just picked up a job in Sedona where the guy has pella windows. I was wondering which piece of glass you would install. Its the first job with pellas windows Iv'e gotten. I was thinking the inside of it but I have seen it on both sides.
Interior films are always better warranty wise, but I believe any film will void pellas warranty..
I did 600SF of pella windows and removed the first pane and installed inside the outer pane. The best part is, you can put ANY film of the pellas as they are not IGU's. SO Huper Drei if you wanted to....
And they are covered by warranty.. At least huper and madico do..
Through the manny, but not Pella right?
i tint the interior side of the exterior-most piece of glass.
To add to that, the reason I did the inside of the outside pane is because of the hole for the IN-BETWEEN shade option. I didn't want to cut a hole in each piece of film, and second reason is it will keep out MORE heat being on the outer pane as opposed to trapping a lot the heat between, the third is the film will be protected.
AS a side note, go back in a couple days and then re-assemble the panes as any moisture will be trapped and fog the windows for a week or so if you don't let it dry first..... I'd like to give a shout out to BJ at WFS in london for the great advice on the pellas before I did this job... Pull the interior panel and install it on the outside pane, you will get better performance that way.

It will fog up like crazy unless you give it some time to dry. Make sure you bid enough to allow for the extra trip back.
If you plan on tinting the inside of the out side pane you must clean the vent holes out in the frame as then the window will be able to properly breath and even with that precaution the film will not last as long as It would if applied to the in side like an normal application would.

I think it would. Its not in a sealed unit. There is ventilation.
Here are 6 pellas.
This picture shows the two DOORS with out the inside panes and one of them with out film. I had to go back as someone broke in thru the glass on one and the other they attempted or something happened and they cracked the glass... ![]() EDIT: I forgot to add the picture QUOTE (film-R @ Aug 18 2009, 02:27 PM) [*]710985[/*] QUOTE (mikeMN @ Aug 18 2009, 09:19 AM) [*]710940[/*] If you plan on tinting the inside of the out side pane you must clean the vent holes out in the frame as then the window will be able to properly breath and even with that precaution the film will not last as long as It would if applied to the in side like an normal application would. honestly i'm not too sure on your thinking there either mike.
i like to do the interior, because sometimes those damn clips dont want to go back in all the way. and it sucks cuttin around them. also dont like cuttin that stupid hole. ive always put them back together right after. ive never had a custy call and complain about the fogging. makes sense that it happens though.
i mean i like to tint the farthest one out. plus they cant scratch it
I think for many reasons the correct way to go about tinting a pella window is to pop out the pella storm. Set it aside and tint the interior of the regular glass, NOT the storm window.

here we consider the interior window the storm window.
i can see how it doesn't make sense though QUOTE (film-R @ Aug 18 2009, 02:27 PM) [*]710985[/*] QUOTE (mikeMN @ Aug 18 2009, 09:19 AM) [*]710940[/*] If you plan on tinting the inside of the out side pane you must clean the vent holes out in the frame as then the window will be able to properly breath and even with that precaution the film will not last as long as It would if applied to the in side like an normal application would. So you think that a few small holes that will release a small amount of heat out will make that film last as long as it would if it was applied on the inside of the room? As you your self has doubts of film lasting inside of an IG unit. Seems to be a very similar situation to me. And yes I have done the same thing many times myself but that was be for life time warranty came out for residential applacations, QUOTE (blade @ Aug 18 2009, 06:25 PM) [*]711125[/*] honestly i'm not too sure on your thinking there either mike. What is the oldest film application you have seen in this type of scenario.
some of you guys are overthinking this. pull the removable pane and do the window like normal. if you want to go back later and put the removable back in that's fine. we've never had issues doing the interior of the outer pane. as for voiding the pella wtty, you're never gonna make $ doing flat if you're worried over voiding a pella wtty.
My exp with pellas is that they just suk period. Even if you pull the interior piece and film the in of the out, Pellas will have snot oozing out of the frame that is a PITA to clean, If you film the removeable piece the locking tabs are a PITA to cut around , If you film the inside of the removable piece you have the rubber gasket that holds the water on the frame and can wick debris behind the film. I just dont like anything about Pella.

Did you seal the edges of the film ?
