Full Version: Big Storefront
Did this estimate this morning before teeing off for 18 holes of golf. Windows are 76" x 91" (6). Customer realizes a seem is necessary and wants the seam horizontal, even though I suggested vertical. Makes no difference to me. Glass is single pane 1/4' thick. Customer chose JWF Palisade 35. Ironically its going to be a tanning salon and they want to keep the sun out...lol

why would u want the seem vertical?
for snapping the film the vertical would be much easier, but for appearance sake the horizontal seam hides easier...most of the time.
i like horizontal seams myself. there are alot more horizontal lines in the reflection of the glass when looking in from the outside...they just seem to blend in.
johnsons ceramic is PS adhesive no snapping there just roll down or hang and peel. dont forget to match edges...
JWF palisade ceramic is not a ps adhesive. Get ur facts strait. LoL
Id stress horizontal as well. If they are not using any window coverings make it at the bottom, if using window coverings, do it at the top. I am helping another company right now with an r/r on a 12 story buiding and many windows have a vertical seam which look likes crap.
Lazies throwin up vertical seems.
U shouldn't do that unless they have vertical blinds, and put that seem to the side they group up on. Otherwise always do a horizontal. Be a professional and hide it the best u can. First vertical seems, then ur piecing backglasses with straight edges. How long have we been in the 21st century? LoL ive never used it, just going off the sample they sent me. i seem to remember the sample being ps. dont worry, ive been wrong lots of times
Those are some bigass windows mang.... I agree with the consensus, I would put the seams horizontal as well....
Hey Cuttingedge, the show from your avatar was filmed here in Wilmington, I haven't seen it, but I heard it was funny as herl...
Hmmm...maybe I will do a horizontal seam at the bottom then, if that makes all you beaches happy...lol yeah maybe I will, it prob would look better. The show is funny as hell shady. Its produced by will ferel so you know its funny....

LoL But if you are rolling it out side to side there will still be "no snapping" no matter what adhesive it has. To bad it is 60" max, I'd rather have a 4" seam than a 16" seam.
I like horizontal, as close to the top as possible, I till the custy that this will help people from messin with it. seems dont look to bad when the windows are all the same size" consistant across the store front". I lay the straight edge on the bottom then tack it and lay up the top piece like a french pane just wetting the film. very small overlap. then I squeege from the overlap to tack it in just the right spot.
butter baby
i would actually ask the store owner if he would like a strip of vinyl across all of the windows where the top of the door is. it will make the store front look uniform and it will hide your seem.
every once in a while we throw up vinyl to hide the wall that people put up against the damn window.

You are a tinter for gosh sakes. Why on earth would you throw vinyl on those windows to hide a seam? Put up some eye catching graphics or, if graphic design is not your thing, always use film to hide the seam. Film blows vinyl away when it comes to windows. No matter what the application is. Period.
just offering alternate solutions. when a seem is unavoidable, it is nice to offer the customer ways to hide it a little better. i would choose to put a high horizontal seem. and would also offer putting the seem at the height of the door, and adding a 2" white trim along it to mimic a frame if they didnt want it noticeable. it happens to be the only way to truly hide the seem.
or put up 5% across the top of all the windows and another film on the bottom half of the window. makes it look more done on purpose than for a seem. some customers are just picky and dont want a seem running across all their windows. i do a lot of gas stations this way. 5% up top and 65% on the bottom half so the police and customers can always see in but still have all the merchandise protected from the UV's
The custy didn't want the vinyl strip thing, believe me, I asked him. Horizontal seam seems like the best option.
seem it horizontal, and hide the seam behind the awning... thats what the pro's would do...
