Full Version: auto glass installations
Just wondering for those who install nwe glass (mainly windshields), where you get the new glass from and whats the avgerage cost to do a job? Thought of an add on, but i dont know where to find a distributor.
Check your yellow pages for a glass distributer, windshield prices could very from $100-$2000 a wide range.definetly not an add on unless you have a very experienced installer
ditto to Mr P., one of the local shops tried doing glass but it only took one screw up and they quit. They had a windshield that leaked and fried a computer in a one ton FORD pickup. (Maybe it was not the windshield
damn fords anyways. thanx for the advice guys.
the true cost of the glass varies from 65 to 109 for a new piece throw in some urathane at 4 bucks a shot and at 1.5 tubes to do most windshields.
if you do cash jobs you can charge 200-275 and insurance jobs at 325 420. the insurance jobs are really becoming an issue with alot of the icsurance companies, shops are'nt getting now what they used to get! I do tinting at a local glass company at least 3 times a week and around here windshields are just about as whored out as tinting :booga
(Mr paladin @ Feb 25 2004, 10:00 PM) I do tinting at a local glass company at least 3 times a week and around here windshields are just about as whored out as tinting :booga you're right. since the invasion of all the aftermarket glass, it has killed those of us who do quality installs using quality OEM glass. the insurance companies are paying less and the cash customers aren't coming in. i mean, why the hell would anyone want to pay me $375 to put in a OEM glass, when the guy down the road will put one in for $185? i mean, it's all the same right? it's just glass.
We also have a glass shop, and we can buy PPG or Pilkington glass for 40.00-180.00 with free delivery on the very next day.
i get the same, but i've never paid $40 for a windshield. the cheapest one i ever remember was about $65. average is around $135. i do know bigger markets pay a lower percentage than i do. but insurance also pays me more. for texas, i'm in the highest paying catagory. i don't get many cash jobs, but i'd rather have insurance anyway. pays a hell of alot more for the same job and i work on nicer, cleaner cars.
I was at a body shop the other day I do some work for and while I was there I was going to see if I could get a freind of mine in the door to get there glass work, anyway I asked who did there glass work he went on to tell me he just can't find a good reliable windshield guy who does quality work, and then I saw a glass price sheet all the wall it had about 100 differant cars on the list for $129 installed. (you get what you pay for I just don't get it)
windshield are whored out here like tint, on some corners you can get a truck done for 99 bucks installed, it's unreal!
For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face:
