Keeping ofla blades sharp

This is my first attempt at tip o' the week so go easy

I have found that olfa blades tend to get dull and not be worth a crap by the time you get to the last 5 or 10 in the pack. It would be nice if there was a way to keep them "Sharp to the last blade". I have been adding a few (10-20) drops of mineral oil or baby oil in the plastic holder. It keeps the air off of the blades and the do not oxidize.

Try it it does work

If you have a shop try filling the yellow plastic container 1/2 full and HOT GLUE it to something. If you are moblie use a little less so you dont have a mess in your box.

doesnt stainless corrode where it has been machined? (maybe ever so slightly)
TINTFXold
i guess i'm what you'd call a heavy clicker. I am constantly taking the edge off. maybe i just go throught them more quickly because of that. I use about 1 full blade per car. I figure i get the sharpest blade that way.

If we had Fx and TTC working here, I would run out of papertowels and snap blades by day 5 Flaugh.gif

same here FX..it's a sign that either your busy or you snap your blade often enough...after all..at a cost of about 3 cents a snap...who cares about "stretching the last little bit out of a blade. ( I noticed my 50pk already has an oil added to it already) hmmmmmmm.gif

sometimes i save the disicant pack from a roll of film if there is one, and keep it where i store my blades, at my old shop any way, the new shop, well...

thumb.gif i snap after a coupe cuts. which means i go through AT LEAST a full blade on a 4 door car, sometimes two. $16.00 for a pack of 50. hmmmmmmm.gif just doesn't register as an "expensive" item to me.
now $2500 for a new bg that i scratched, that's an expensive item.

Yup, exactly

From what I was told, that small strip of wax type paper is oil soaked and is used to keep the blades from dulling as fast. Not sure exactly why but I was told to make sure you leave that strip touching the sharp part of the blade. I guess it doesn't hurt to add more oil to it.

Im not taking about saving the last couple of snaps on a blade (Im cheap but lets not get crazy). What i mean is the last 5-10 full blades that are still in the pack arent as sharp as the first one was when you opened a new pack. By keeping the air off the blades for the 2 months or so that the sit they stay really sharp first blade is as sharp as the 50th. Just try it youll see

And even though the say Stainless theyre not stainless steel. A magnet will not pick up stainless steel and stainless steel will not rust olfa blades do both

That is so true. I actually use the end of my magnetic screwdriver to pick up the snapped off pieces of blades that are on the ground. If it were full stainless steel, the magnet will not pick them up. hmmmmmmm.gif

Great tinters think alike. Fbigeyes.gif Was tired of reaching down and picking them up by hand. Saw one of the snapped blades stuck to the end of my screwdriver and the light turned on inside my head and I haven't turned off that light since.

Do you think the bulb will burn out? hmmmmmmm.gif rollin.gif

Stainless steel is not a particular type of metal, it is an alloy made of metals which have properties similar to steel.

For that matter, steel is an alloy (of Iron), too.

Other than pure elemental metals such as gold, iron copper, etc., Any metal you use is an alloy.

Having said all that, Some stainless steels are magnetic, others are not.
Some will rust/oxidize, others will not. Some are harder and some are softer.

Just an FYI

Thank You

I honestly only use 1-2 blades a day 5 days a week thats a pack a month and they get dull
reddot
I will not put a blade into film that has been used. After it goes in the film for a cut, it comes out and right in the snap-off box. I buy them by the case, it's cheaper and it's not like they will have something different soon. I would love to see a ceramic blade or scraper blade for the triumph.

I tried that too about a few months ago. What a mess!

What I do know is separate about 10-blades at a time and store the rest in a cool (DRY) place. This has helped tremendously.

Also have paid more attention to drying my hands before I open any pack of blades to remove one for use. This both saves the mess and preserves the blade.

I guar-on-tee !!!

For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face:
now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
