does 301 have Water pump divider plate?

Just picked up a 1979 catalina with a 301 2bbl. car was overheating but had no heat. after flushing system, refilled radiator and found NO flow at all. thought water pump shaft was broken but found it ok. It has the cooling inserts but on plate. I know the 400 has this plate and that without it, the car will overheat. Since this is my first time into a 301, I don't know if it is supposed to be there. If so, does it have to be a 301 plate or can any pontiac plate work.
