Sorry to bother u guys.. but i recently purchased 1 roll of Gila 20% limo black tint and one roll of 35% tint for my 1998 grand am se... also got a lil kit with the razor etc..

i got it at pepboys.... ne ways

my question is... after reading through some of the posts on the message boards.. it seems that Gila = bad for tinting windows?

im a total newbie when it comes to car stuff and my friend is the one who helped me pick it out... what brand do u recommend? or should i stick with gila? (my car is red) or ne advice on installing it correctly?

if u could help me out.. id really appreciate it! thanks

get your money back on the crap you bought, and take it to an established tint facility. if you just have to do it yourself, go to a tint shop and buy some of thier film. it will be ALOT more than the crap you bought, but it's better film. but it really don't matter, cause good film does not equal a good tint job.
be sure and take pics when your done and post them here so we can all have a good laugh!!!

Yeah, another crappy tint job on the road with crappy tint is bad for business, idiot manufacturers shouldn't seel that crap!

yea they shouldent sell it either

ok soo thats the general concenscious... i should take it back??

cause me and my friend were gonna do together tommorow? what should i tell her? umm i talked with some people and they said that GILA = crappy brand and that i should get it done professionally.. rather then solo...

but another Question... if she says she has done it before no problems.. should i go ahead and do it? or will it mess up my windows like completly? god knows i dont want my damn window thingies fallin out when im at college... ugh

ty for the help so far

It probably wont be worth the agony...i know what that stuff looks like shortly after applying and it will look bad, especially ig the job isnt quite up to par. For your sake i would take the gila back and save some more cashe up and have it done right ....Just my opinion 8)

Go ahead and tint it yourself, you have nothing to lose, but maybe some scratched glass and broken defogger lines and a cruddy looking tint job, the Gila film is inexpenseive so it's a good film to practice with, but dont expect good results. Even if you had top of the line film, you will not be able to do an adequate job.

Just as professional golfers make it look easy...it's not.

If you are just wanting to practice, then yes Gila is fine, if you are just doing this as a one time thing to tint your car, for pete's sake, take it to a reputable shop.

Thinking you can tint your own car is on the same level as thinking you can paint your own car, which is very insulting to a professional tinter, thats why you got the replies you did.

hmm ok i just hope i wont hurt my friends feelings my taking it back =( lol

and i hope they let me take it back... how much would a tint job cost? and how long would it take to do? (could i watch them do it?) soo many Q's lol

ty again

Sounds like your friend really wants to tint your car for ya lol

for once i can help answer someones question...

True story:

Had a guy bring me his truck, his friend who fooed up his AutoZone tint and asked if I would allow them watch me tint his truck.

Every time I did anything (even the most mundane thing) like spray the window down with cleaning solution and squeegee the glass he'd look angrily towards his now dejected wannabe-tinter friend and say something like, "You see ******* - that's how you do it!" "He asked me what I was using for mounting solution and I told him baby shampoo 'n water. He said, "Well Einphuckin-stein over here says you're supposed to windex and dishsoap for that !" When it was all said and done I really enjoyed tinting for this guy and his friend. He was an owner operator of a Tow Truck and I suppose the friend he had tagging along was his little bitch helper who wanted to impress his boss. Poor guy.

Oh well...Good luck having your buddy tint your windows. Hopefully you'll go easy on him if it doesn't turn out well.

its a she actually.. shes really into cars... way more then i am... i think she has done it before.. im gonna call her right now.. and explain what ive heard from u guys.. maybe me and her can go and get it professionally done today..

ok.. welll she has not done it before.. but her friends have.. pff soo otherwise i dont think im gonna go the 60$ route.. but tell me guys... if u could what a reasonable professional price would be for tinting all windows.. in my 1998 Grand am se

i called around today and i got a mix of prices.. soo if u could tell me a general price that would be great! thanks again for ur help guys.. it looks like i willl be returning that gila crud soon

2 door 140 and a 4 door 169 is what we do. 150 for a two door &190 for a four door is the going rate in my neck of the woods

I'm in IL, I charge $165.00 for a 2 door, 190.00 for a 4 door. Hope this helps

hey MDOG, have you noticed that these guys are charging about $35 more than we are here in texas? and it's fooing HOT here!!!! maybe we should raise our prices??

What's stopping you?

for me i will have to threaten to quit again lol seems the only way i can get somethig done up in hea

i just looked it up and my prices haven't changed since '99. except for the people only wanting 2 front doors, that went to $55 last summer. may be time for a price hike??

Well yeah, you're not the owner mdog, but for the owners, how can you justify the same price year in and year out, Insurance will eat you alive like that. Along with rent, utilities etc. everything goes up. They sure aren't selling many cars for $10,000 any more are they?

Damn, you guys are doing that for cheap. 2dr 199 4dr 239 2fronts 85. In my neck of the woods these are very competitive prices.

hell no, and the film goes up every year too. but i still have reat customers that ask if the price is the same, and i ask "what price is that?" and it will be a price from '97. they think the price should never change. the people here are fooing wierd. i've had several people from here drive 55 miles away because the guy there is $5 cheaper than me on everything. i'm not exaggerating, this happens at least once a month. if i raised my prices to $190 on a 4 door, i'd go out of business.
$55
we do 2 for 59 and i am positive it could be 69 or 79, they are just too chickencrud, i have heard several times when a customer comes in for a quote on 2 doors and they say "59.thats all" like they expected more :lol thats what customers i want here.

i have never heard a customer utter those words. half the time it's "ok", the other half it's "55 DOLLARS??" followed by them hanging up or leaving.

I really think you'd be surprised TTS, raising prices won't put you out of business, crappy work will, and I doubt that is an issue, I get people going for the cheapest to, See Ya, I let em go. Who wants the cheap bastards anyhow, they usually complain the most!

going rate on staten island was about 150 a car until a year ago,,new shop opened and charged 225 to 249 for a car,,,everybody else followed and they all are getting it,,,if everyone keeps to the same price,,,you will get it

You're starting to get it..:lol...As soon as I started raising prices, so did most of the other shops, they price check ya know. And if they know you have caller ID, they have a buddy call. I'm sure of this, and I think it's funny, but why you guys refuse to lead, and instead follow is beyond me. :dunno Even if you're the LOWEST in town, you won't get EVERY job!!!!!!

Your right OT!!!!! I have guys drive to the next town for tint too!! But oh well if they want to drive that far for 10 bucks then go ahead..its like 25 miles so they will spend thaty in gas!

And they are not the type you want in your shop in the first place!

For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face:
now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
