Wooden Frames
This week's tip:
Another thing you can try dry scraping. You can find it explained as "flat glass edge prep" under the tip of the week column. Its the best way to avoid contamination. I never flush the windows out anymore because of the number of @#$ty sealed units. I tryed dry scraping once and have never turned back! Was registered a while back but got to busy at the workshop. Can't remember what site I was registered at, but this was the first I registered on. I use a 2" paint brush and cut the brissles in 1/2. After I dry scrape I go around with the brush. Works great! Then use very little slip. On really dirty old frames, just wet the film, not the glass. Just rinse the pane like normal, but dont rewet it for install. Keeps alot of contamination out. I'm with AAA on this. My job today was all wooden frames...silicone and paint along the edges. I'm so used to wetting the glass so my first window I sprayed the top and the top sides...then remembered to dry scrape. I dry scraped all the paint first and got a blade underneath the silicone to seperate it from the glass. Then took my Olfa and cut the silicone away from the edge and even made my own border. (The paint on the outside frame was now sticking out more than the inside frame.) Then I did what FBJ does, took a paint brush (cut in half to make stiffer) and brushed underneath the frames and then the frames and sides of the glass. Then I prepped as usual but using less water around the edges. They all came out frikkin' clean. I wanted to spank myself for doing such a good job. jerkit.gif Made me wanna scream..."I'M THE BEST!!! I'M THE BEST!!!!" paint brush here too and as little slip as poss.I've started useing a bad ass little vacum I got from home depot sometimes on bigger installs, damn little think has as much suction as my shop vac works great with the brush attacment. they were demoing it in the store by picking up a bowling ball Oh man, I swear I thought I was the only one who would use a vaccum at a job site. My other friends who has a large ass tint company kinda laffed at me when he called me and he asked why I was taking so long at this one site. I told him I was vacuuming all the edges first because it was beyond dirty. He said i'm wasting my time. Go figure.
