There remains to a large degree, a great deal of confusion about automotive film laws and which films are compatible with which cars, in which states and under which circumstances. If these are issues you are already very familiar with, bear with me. Based upon the continuous flow of questions we get at EWF about this issue, I am creating this post to help make things a little clearer for all of those who are still a little confused by it. Not a week goes by when we don’t get a call from a dealer(s) asking why their customer got a ticket when they put 35% film on a car and “the law says 35%”. First: There are two types of laws: Film Laws: Laws that reg…

Let's put this thread up as a reference to point to for customers that post here who may be inclined to tint darker than legal. Instead of repeating the same old arguments, we can just give a link to this thread. A link to this thread will also appear in the side navigation for easy reference, so, let's hear some of the many good reasons to keep it legal!

I bought a vehicle from a dealer in NC that came from FL. FL tint is 28%, NC is 35%. It was inspected prior to the sale and the tint was not inspected. Measurement by a tint dealer reads 31.2% - out of spec of 32%. Now I must replace it. Is there any liability for the inspection station?

I never had to have tint removed or windows tinted. I was referred to a shop that could remove the bubbled tint clear and tint pretty much all windows. I was not aware nor was it mentioned that they do not clean the windows first. Or that it was like even hard to wash off. Lol. Blind i am to that. My question is, i have a warranty. But, did they have any obligation to inform me of the fact that there would be a problem with clarity still? Or that i should have it removed first? My whole reason for getting them scraped and done was so i could see out of them. So, now that they are tinted what can i do now?

I just paid to have LLumar CTX 5% & 15%, & air 80 installed on my vehicle. I have skin cancer and need to have this installed. I am very suspicious of the place I used to install it. They couldn't provide any information regarding the Llumar warranty documentation, registration, or even roll numbers. I found from a brief search online that I should have received this information. They also wanted to do business on a cash basis. As I said, I have skin cancer and need to know I have the genuine article installed. I have a couple of questions regarding this. * How do I contact Llumar to find out what I should have received? And how do I verify what I have…

So last I knew the law in Michigan for front window tint was no more then the top 4"'s and down 4"'s on the windshield. Had a coworker get pulled over on October 12, 2018, it was a state cop who pulled her over for the tint. She then had her roll her window down, put a "tool" that looked to be made from cardboard/thicker paper. She then had her roll her window up so it was just cracked about 1/2". Following that she said her tint was .7% too dark. She had the windows fully tinted in 20%. She said that she let her go with no issue and warned her it was illegal. So this has me wondering, has the law changed at all and what exactly could this "tool" have been?

Hey all. I am a consumer. Doing research on tint for my 4runner. Looking at crystalline or huper. I want the front windshield done but I have questions about legality. When I look at the tint law charts there isn't a state that gives a percent for the front windshield. They all just give the as1 line or inches but the tint shops here (tx) will stick cr90 but won't do cr70. So I guess my question is is the cr90 just light enough hat no one gets fines ever and is actually still illegal or is there an actuall vlt% allowance on the windshield? Thanks!

So guys and gals I'm new to the forum world and don't usually use them but just started my own business and figured I could come here to get some good answers. We just signed on with 3M films and they are telling me that in the color stable line, there is not a "legal" film for North Carolina. Ours can be 32%. He tells me that Color stable 35% will meter about 27-29%. Is this right? They are telling me that if a customer wants their car to have 35% to use Obsidian 40%. I don't agree with this. The customer is paying for the higher grade. What do y'all think? Do y'all have an issue with the CS 35% registering lower than 32%. Thanks guys! Sorry Im so wordy.

I am thinking about including on my work orders a " not liable" check box that confirms that the customer is aware of the state tint laws and has agreeded to proceed with the service. Example - Customer wants 5% all around yet the law in Florida is 28% front windows 15% rear. I explain the law and he/she agrees and signs. I don't want it coming back and biting me in the ass I just want to give the customer what they want. Any opinions?

I want to start a mobile tinting business in South Florida. I have read all the flaws about it regarding the weather, transportation, clients having garages or not, dirt/dust, etc. But I am optimistic and have seen great jobs done outside. Is there a website I can go to that will list exactly what I need to run it legally? Thanks for any input.

I have a sunscreen medical exemption in Florida and did 5 percent all the way around and 15 on windshield. I haven’t been pulled over yet but will they be able to see it when they run my tag or will they just pull me over every time and I have to show the paper? Also If I travel to nc am I going to get hassled even with a tint medical exemption? Thanks

So when they say 5" from the top of the windshield in the laws regarding the Windshield As1 line strips, where at the top do you measure from? I have a new F150 and the roof is tiered in the middle at the top of the glass. I'm also running a contoured strip (straight). So is the measurement of 5" taken from the outside of the vehicle or the inside? And does the non clear part of the windshield count behind the molding? It's only a 3" strip in the center from the inside and 5.5" on the edges due to the tiered roofline.

Just a heads up for anybody in MO. A lot, and I mean a lot of people have been coming in saying they failed a safety due to the third brake light being tinted over. Has not been an issue in years past. There is a new audit system in place in Missouri and inspectors have to take pics of the car and upload them (so I have heard). We have always tried to follow the law and make a small cut out for them but I guess others are not. Really strange that on most of these cars the front doors are illegal and the inspectors aren't batting an eye at them.

We all know reasons for custys to keep it legal but I wonder if all the shop owners & installers know what the penalty is in their state for installing illegal film. Please post your State & penalty.

For the 3 Utah members on this forum... lol Effective 1/1/18 there will be no more mandatory safety inspections. http://fox13now.com/2017/03/26/you-no-longer-have-to-get-a-vehicle-safety-inspection-in-utah/ What do you guys think? In terms of window tint how will this influence your work? Business as usual? Personally I think I'll stop cutting out third brake lights. Currently I worry about customers having problems come inspection time, so I always make sure to cut out third brake lights. But I highly doubt anyone will be bothered with the inspection program being depleted.

With the Laws and how strict they are here in PA how is it even possible to pursue a career in Auto window tinting? What do some of you guys who live here do about laws? When it comes to me, window tinting is something I dont push very much because of it. Most of the work I do is for car dealers, and we offer many more services, which allows me to be very selective about the jobs I take. Mainly trucks/vans/suv's & subaru hatch backs ha. Out of all we do though, window tinting is my favorite, I really enjoy doing it. I'd love to one day have a shop, but with the laws, it seems nearly out of the question. thoughts?

I own a tint shop in NYS. I have been in business for 32 years. Our Governor just signed a bill making tint part of the vehicle inspection yearly. If you have less than 70% net VLT, your vehicle will fail inspection! This means we are out of business folks! Please sign the attached petition, and have all your friends and relatives sign it as well....it might get lawmakers to at least consider 40% or 50%, so that we can stay in business. Thanks in advance!! https://www.change.org/p/new-york-state-senate-make-window-tint-legal-in-new-york-state?recruiter=false&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=copylink

SC Violation 1 2

Hello All, My window tint guy asked me to come here and ask a question. I drive an 06 xB and live down here in Myrtle Beach, SC. We both though the car is a "multi-passenger" vehicle which then entails we could do 27% on the front (legal) and as dark as we want on the rear. I see a lot of the SC laws state 27% all around. I just got a violation on this after 2 1/2 years with this tint on my car. Can someone please clarify on this situation. I need to know if I just have to change my rear to 27% or is the xB considered a "multi-passenger" vehicle? Thanks for any input. Tim

Last I heard, it was no less than 25% on all side windows, though another person mentioned that it is now 25% on only the front 2 windows, and anything goes on the side windows behind the driver. Any idea where to find the most recent wording on the law ?

This is for u Canadian tinters. I had a customer come into the shop this afternoon for a price on stripping all the windows on his car. This car was done in a chrome film and who ever did the job knew what they were doing. I asked him why he wanted to strip these windows and he said he was moving to Canada for work and they didnt allow tint in Canada. He is worried about going through customs to get into Canada and liscensing the car there. I told him I would strip it for him but also told him that I knew there are tint shops there from seeing u tinters on this web site. If I could get some advice from a tinter in Canada about wether their vehicle could be liscensed there…

Hey guys, I'm moving to Idaho next week and I've been trying to find out if my tint is legal. I have a 2008 Toyota Tacoma, 4-Wheel drive, 4 door (seats 5 people). My truck came with factory tint around 20% on the back side windows and rear window. The aftermarket tint on the front windows is 35%... this is the max for Idaho. The aftermarket tint on the back side windows and rear window is 5%. The legal tint for passenger vehicles in idaho is 35% in the front, 20% on the rear sides, and 35% on the rear window. According to IWFA (See this PDF) current as of 10/13/2015, MPV's can have any tint on the back side and rear windows (this is not the case for passen…

Hey, Just passing along some information as I have been tinting in Indiana for about 16 years now, and offering a little insight into our tinting laws in Indiana. In 2014 Indiana Law Makers decided to treat a Traffic Stop for an "Alleged" Window Tint violation similar to that of a Seatbelt violation. Which means that if I were to stop a car for a Tinting Violation or Seatbelt, I am required to obtain information to either write a ticket or warning, and release them from the stop in a timely (brief) manner. This change eliminates an Officer from asking investigatory questions, or asking to search a vehicle. The only thing that can supercede this is development of i…

Hello fellow tinters. Is there any tinters on here currently vehicle tinting in Spain or the Canary Islands. I read somewhere that you can have any shade behind the B pilar but a certificate needs to be given upon completion. First question is do you have to purchase the tint from a certain supplier and secondly where are the certificates purchased from and how much? Appreciate any info received.

I'm wanting to tint my Silverado ext cab and want to get my front two windows as close to the stock rear windows as possible(which are 18%) and I know I won't be able to get exactly there because I want to stay legal. In texas the tint law is 25% on the front two so does that mean I can put 25% film on my front two windows and be good to go or do I need to factor in the factory stock 77% tint that are on the front two? If so I think that 35% will get me pretty close(27%) to legal? The cops in my county are a pain in the ass and are everywhere so I'd like to not have to get a ticket every week. And also does anyone have an idea of how much a tint ticket would be? Also will…

Hey guys. I'm new around here, I am a member of several car forums and the likes. I need some assistance. My father has a car (several) with a tint exemption. I was driving one back in February and received a ticket for tint. I presented the exemption slip when asked why I had dark tint, and told him the car was my fathers'. He gave me the ticket and said I'll see you in court. Fast forward 2 months to court date and the attorney and the leo say that the exemption follows the owner and not the car. I showed them the exemption where it states that "The owner of the vehicle has supplied this office with prop paper work and that this vehicle is exempt from the MS State T…

I have noticed people jump every time I say I tinted a full car (which includes the windshield). Windshield tinting here in PR is LEGAL. The law states all windows in a car must have a minimum of 35% vlt. So yes, it is legal to tint your windshield. We use 43% ASWF film on the windshield. Unless a customer asks for something darker at their own risk.
