flat glass tint on autos?

I was told that auto glass does not last like flatglass tint because it's more dye than metal and that FGlass tint can be warrentied longer, that was the main difference. I do not do cars but was wondering what the deal is. I did actually put Sungard silver 35 on my van windows and it seems to look great, although I did have to use heat to get it to stretch into place where it was being stubborn. Is auto tint film stretchier or what? I have no clue. What I did discover is that I'm way too big to crawl around inside cars and try to put on tint, makes me freakin claustrophobic.

Aaahhh Luuuuuke, mustn't stretch window film... it should only be shrunk.

In the past, many architectural films had too high a light reflectance value to be safe for use on autos, some still do. If sunlight were to reflect off the cars glass surface and hit some other driver in the eye.... :thumb:thumb they'll have spots before their eyes similar to those from a camera flash.

Most auto film work through absorption rather than reflection, which is okay since most auto glass is tempered (save the windshield/windscreen). There isn't a window film made today that has the ability to break tempered glass, but there are many that break annealed glass, which is found in buildings and homes.

I remembered the first time a guy in our area wante his car tinted..can't remember the car..but it was in 1978 , I was just a kid helping my dad loading in the back window ..it was outside and the film was a shiny silver made from Sun - X no auto tools at the time....needless to say it didn't look too good :thumb

I don't get it how long does the adverage person keep a car anyway? I have a couple of customers that I tinted there cars back in 85-86 that I saw them 10 years later no bubbles no purple :thumb then in the late 90's I tinted some cars with the new state of the art films :thumb dyed and metal both went bad in 3 years or less, are they really makeing films better? or just more profitable for the munufactures, anyway 90% of my customers don't keep a car for more than 3 years so at this point if will hold up at least 4 years I guess I am ok :thumb

I agree

I saw an old DTI Limo (3ply dyed) job done by Karshak aka SolarBlock glass tinting that was 15 years old and no bubbles.

Sure it was likely garaged, but damn. There are films out there today theat turn purple in the box.
