What is an established tinting business worth?

I have been tinting for over 17 years now and still enjoy what I do but sometimes I get a little burnt out. I am currently running 2 businesses and sometimes I feel the paperwork alone takes alot of my time away from my family and friends. I work 6 days a week and my shop actually opens 7 days a week because one of my guys prefers to work on Sundays rather than Saturdays. Of course I am not sure if the current tinter that is my sub-contractor will continue to work for him or not. Anyway, I had a crazy idea and was wondering what everyone thinks of this.

Let's just say hypothetically speaking that I built a business up in 2 years and I decided I want to sell it. Since this is a labor intensive business, I know it has to be sold to a right person who either has the ability to learn how to tint or is able to find employees or sub-contractors to do the work. Let's just say if my company grossed $100,000 per year in business and the net income is $60,000. What is this business worth on the open market if I were to sell it?

I have heard something like 2-3 times net income but I am not 100% sure. If that is true, this business would be worth $120K-$180K range. Of course I will need to train the new owner on how to tint as well as how I manage the books and would probably include a 6 months training. During that training stage, would I still get paid for what I did or is that part of the selling price of the business?

This probably won't happen but "IF" I decide to sell one of my businesses, what do you all think it is worth including inventory and accounts that I have established?

Its worth whatever you can get for it. I've sold a bedliner shop and set up a couple people in businesses-set your price then entertain offers-very few people with that kind of money will pay the asking price anyway!Do you own the property or lease? You can also check with a business broker in your area. They will have the best idea of what your biz is worth! Good Luck!ss

Dont think a tint shop is even worth what was quoted. Think about it. All you are really buying is a phone # and some inventory.

The employees dont have to stay. The clients dont have to frequent there anymore. Look at some business classifieds from Florida

or Arizona. You will find that the asking price for an established tint shop would be somewhere around 30 to 40K .

I've heard 2-3 times gross for 1 year, averaged over your years in business. There is no standard that I know of.

Most people I know of that have sold an established business have owned the property, sold the business itself, leased the building to the new owner and worked for a salary, for a pre determined amount of time. Once their contract is up, they still collect rent,

for when they sign a lease they lock the buyer in for X amount of years, so they can't just up and move out right afterwards.

Your established name, your clientel, equipment, and knowledge of the business is what they are buying.... not just a few rolls of film

and some tools.

In other words, your business is worth whatever someone who wants it, is willing to pay.

Good luck, I have thought many times of selling my headaches to someone else. Just never had the intestinal fortitude to do it. :beer:beer

It is worth about half of what it grosses about 50k and that is if you get lucky and find someone to buy it, like yoda said all you are buying is a phone # and some inventory. There are lots of tint shops currantly for sale right now do some searches and see.
